Research shows that diverse teams working together and capitalizing on innovative ideas and distinct perspectives outperform homogenous teams. Scientists and trainees from diverse backgrounds and life experiences bring different perspectives, creativity, and individual enterprise to address complex scientific problems. There are many benefits that flow from a diverse NIH-supported scientific workforce, including fostering scientific innovation; enhancing global competitiveness; contributing to robust learning environments; improving the quality of the researchers; advancing the likelihood that underserved or health disparity populations participate in, and benefit from, health research; and enhancing public trust.

As part of broader university-wide diversity and inclusion efforts, the Office of the President and the Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship (OARS) have issued a special call for proposals to conduct research, scholarship, or creative activities in the areas of social justice, human rights, diversity, and inclusion. Proposals may be submitted in any of these areas, but must address a scholarly question that will lead to testable objectives or measurable outcomes.

The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) is pleased to offer a limited number of conference grants. These grants will be used to subsidize the cost of attendance for individuals to attend either CUR Dialogues 2015: Climbing the Ladder to Funding Success: Diverse Sources, Diverse Pathways or Undergraduate Research Programs: Building, Enhancing, Sustaining. Nominees are asked to provide contact and demographic information, a statement of expenses, a statement describing financial need, and a statement on expected outcomes from attending the conference. Historically under-represented groups and first-time attendees will be given priority. The review committee will work to ensure awardees represent a diverse subset of the applicants, specifically across discipline/CUR Division and geographic location. Awardees will receive the conference grant as a rebate after their confirmed participation in the conference, and the submission of reimbursement paperwork.

This funding opportunity announcement encourages collaborative teams to target gaps in methods and outcomes regarding research participant recruitment and retention. The team approach encouraged by this initiative will be used to generate a research resource to advance processes for high yield recruitment, formulate breakthrough ideas, concepts and approaches to research participant recruitment and retention, strengthen outreach and community engagement practices, and devise improved communication strategies. Teams will demonstrate the success of these improvements by engaging a large diverse population. The primary outcome will be the development of a population of diverse community members ready to engage in NIA funded clinical research studies.

The purpose of the NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to provide support and "protected time" (three to five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence. Although all of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this support mechanism to support career development experiences that lead to research independence, some ICs use the K01 award for individuals who propose to train in a new field or for individuals who have had a hiatus in their research career because of illness or pressing family circumstances. Other ICs offer separate K01 FOAs intended to increase research workforce diversity.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) seeks to stimulate research that tests optimal end-of-life and palliative care (EOLPC) interventions/models of care that are based on individual- and family-centered outcomes. The testing of EOLPC interventions and models of care are urgently needed that address racial, ethnic and/or cultural diversity in children and adults for those with serious, advanced illness. Trials are needed to test efficacy and effectiveness of these interventions and/or models of care.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) announces this continuing initiative to provide dissertation awards to increase diversity in the scientific research workforce engaged in research on aging and aging-related health conditions within NIA's strategic priorities.

This initiative seeks applications that propose to stimulate and expand research in the health of minority men. Specifically, this initiative is intended to: 1) enhance our understanding of the numerous factors (e.g., sociodemographic, community, societal, personal) influencing the health promoting behaviors of racial and ethnic minority males across the life cycle, and 2) encourage applications focusing on the development and testing of culturally and linguistically appropriate health-promoting interventions designed to reduce health disparities among racially and ethnically diverse males age 18 and older.

CADS invites research proposals from Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty members for its 2018 Research Fellowships. The fellowships provide support for Miami's faculty on projects broadly related to the area of analytics and data science. CADS will fund one proposal up to $25,000 for one year in duration. Topics should address problems, challenges, or questions that emerge in response to larger, more diverse, higher volume data. Multidisciplinary proposals featuring researchers from different academic divisions are strongly encouraged, with a minimum expectation of researchers representing different academic departments. Proposals comprised only of researchers from within a single academic department will not be considered.

Social connections can help us thrive. But too many people feel disconnected from society and from life, and that contributes to a host of physical, mental and emotional health problems. RWJF is looking for applicants who represent organizations from a wide range of fields and disciplines-both within and outside the health sector. The Ohio Affiliate of  Prevent Blindness is accepting applications for its 2018 Young Investigator Student Fellowship Awards for Female Scholars in Vision Research. The Fellowship Program is designed to provide support for outstanding female scientists committed to pursuing biomedical, behavioral or clinical research careers relevant to the mission of Prevent Blindness - to prevent blindness and preserve sight.  Grants will be awarded for the summer 2018 session.  Awards will range from $3000-$5000 depending upon the availability of funds. The deadline for receipt of applications is Feb. 15, 2018. Applicants must be post-baccalaureate students enrolled in a master's or doctorate program during the summer of 2018, female, citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and conducting their research with a recognized academic institution in the State of Ohio. Applications from diverse fields in the health sciences including, but not limited to ophthalmology, optometry, nursing, genetics, public health, nutrition, gerontology, and bioengineering, are appropriate to the goals of this fellowship award. The Ohio Affiliate of Prevent Blindness encourages fellowship applications which investigate public health issues related to the burden of eye-related health and safety topics.

The NIA Behavioral and Social Research LEaders in Alzheimer's Disease and Its Related Dementias (NIA BSR LEADR) program supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose to use behavioral and social science perspectives and approaches for highly innovative, impactful, and potentially transformative theoretical, empirical, and clinical research addressing the challenges raised by Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) for individuals, their families, and society. Applications are welcome from individuals with diverse backgrounds. NIA encourages applications on a variety of AD/ADRD topics in which behavioral and social research can contribute, such as dementia care, dementia caregiver research, cognitive and dementia epidemiology, behavioral and social pathways of AD/ADRD, early psychological changes preceding AD/ADRD, prevention of AD/ADRD, and disparities in AD/ADRD or dementia-related outcomes.

The goal of this FOA is to support basic and clinical research on the influence of alcohol on susceptibility and progression of Alzheimer's disease and its related dementias. Recent longitudinal studies have provided strong evidence that alcohol use disorder is associated with the high risk of all types of dementias, and frequent heavy drinking increases risk of both Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Even moderate alcohol consumption may be a risk factor for adverse brain outcomes and cognitive decline. Although these studies link heavy and frequent alcohol drinking to dementias in aging populations, mechanisms contributing to this relationship are not well understood. With this FOA, we solicit research projects that combine diverse expertise and use innovative approaches to investigate mechanisms by which alcohol affects brain aging processes to produce dementias and influences development of Alzheimer's disease.
