Alzheimer's Research | The CART Fund - 0 views

    Rotary International is accepting applications for its CART Fund, a program designed to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer's disease research projects within the United States.
    To that end, the fund will award grants of up to $250,000 to support for early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be new and distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
    Eligible applications may come from full time faculty (or equivalent status) at U.S.-based public and private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories.

    The Interdisciplinary Behavioral and Social Science Research (IBSS) competition promotes the conduct of interdisciplinary research by teams of investigators in the social and behavioral sciences. Emphasis is placed on support for research that involves researchers from multiple SBE disciplinary fields and that integrates scientific theoretical approaches and methodologies from multiple SBE disciplinary fields. Emphasis also is placed on the significance of expected intellectual contributions that are likely to yield generalizable insights and information that will enhance theoretical perspectives and advance basic knowledge and capabilities across multiple SBE disciplinary fields. Although the IBSS competition will consider any proposal that addresses a topic for which the proposal makes a compelling case that the research will enhance broader theoretical understanding across multiple social and behavioral science fields, social and behavioral science researchers are especially encouraged to submit proposals for research on one of the following three broadly defined topics: Population Change; Sources and Consequences of Disparities; and Technology, New Media, and Social Networks.

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is issued as an initiative of the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research.  The Neuroscience Blueprint is a collaborative framework through which 15 NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices jointly support neuroscience-related research, with the aim of accelerating discoveries and reducing the burden of nervous system disorders (for further information, see http://neuroscienceblueprint.nih.gov/).  The Neuroscience Blueprint is supporting a Lifespan Human Connectome Project (L-HCP) to extend the Human Connectome Project (HCP) (http://www.neuroscienceblueprint.nih.gov/connectome) to map connectivity in the developing, adult, and aging human brain.  The goal of this FOA is to solicit grant applications that propose to extend the experimental protocols developed through the HCP to children in the 0-5 year old age range to investigate the structural and functional changes that occur in the brain during typical development.  Related FOAs solicit applications that apply the HCP protocols to the 5-21 year old age range and to middle age and elderly adults to explore changes that occur during normal aging.

    Proposals in areas where support from the National Institutes of Health or other traditional funding sources is unlikely because the research is high risk are particularly encouraged if they have potential to lead to major new advances in the understanding of basic mechanisms of aging. Projects investigating age-related diseases also qualify, but only if approached from the point of view of how basic aging processes may lead to these outcomes. Projects concerning mechanisms underlying common geriatric functional disorders are encouraged, as long as these include connections to fundamental problems in the biology of aging.     The Mentored Clinical Research Award (MCRA) for new investigators is funded by a grant from the Parkinson's Disease Foundation (PDF) to the Parkinson Study Group (PSG). The PDF collaborates with the PSG to encourage the professional and scientific development of young investigators on their path to independence. To this end, this grant supports a new investigator for a one year project in patient oriented research in Parkinson's disease (PD) or other parkinsonian disorders. The new investigator works under the mentorship of an experienced investigator. Training should enhance the junior clinical research skills. The research plan should address unmet needs of people living with PD, have the potential for broad application among the PD community, and lead to advances in clinically relevant treatment options.

    The Division of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology (DGCG) at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) supports clinical trials on topics relating to aging and the elderly.  Researchers with interest in clinical trials with direct costs of up to $2 million per year are encouraged to contact the Clinical Trials Branch staff at gcgquery@nia.nih.gov.  DGCG also invites suggestions from the scientific community regarding needs for large (over $2 million direct and/ or over $3 million total costs per year) clinical trials in topic areas relevant to DGCG's mission.  NIA will use your suggestions in its planning process to select high-priority topic areas in which significant existing knowledge indicates the need for large clinical trials to provide more definitive information on risks and benefits of interventions for diseases and conditions in the elderly.

    The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) is pleased to offer a limited number of conference grants. These grants will be used to subsidize the cost of attendance for individuals to attend either CUR Dialogues 2015: Climbing the Ladder to Funding Success: Diverse Sources, Diverse Pathways or Undergraduate Research Programs: Building, Enhancing, Sustaining.

    Nominees are asked to provide contact and demographic information, a statement of expenses, a statement describing financial need, and a statement on expected outcomes from attending the conference. Historically under-represented groups and first-time attendees will be given priority. The review committee will work to ensure awardees represent a diverse subset of the applicants, specifically across discipline/CUR Division and geographic location.

    Awardees will receive the conference grant as a rebate after their confirmed participation in the conference, and the submission of reimbursement paperwork.

    The emergent field of geroscience seeks to relate the biology of aging to the development of chronic diseases and the onset of degenerative conditions which are prevalent in the older segment of human populations. It is generally accepted that age is the major risk factor for most chronic diseases and degenerative conditions in adults. Thus, a critical question in geroscience is to identify components in the biology of aging that are the underlying risk for multiple chronic diseases and degenerative conditions. Therefore, this FOA will support planning grants to circumscribe the scope of this question and suggest ways to answer it experimentally. The focus will be on epigenetics underlying aging as a risk factor for age-related diseases and degenerative conditions in humans. Mortality and age-related mortality are outside the scope of this FOA. Studies using model organisms are outside the scope of this FOA.
