The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College works to promote research on retirement issues, transmit new findings to a broad audience, help train new scholars, and expand access to valuable data resources. The center is accepting applications for two funding opportunities: The Steven H. Sandell Grant Program provides funding opportunities for scholars from all academic disciplines and senior scholars working in a new area to pursue cutting-edge projects having to do with retirement income and disability insurance issues. Junior scholars within the first ten years of their academic career and tenured scholars entering a new field are encouraged to submit a proposal. The principal investigator and co-principal investigator, if applicable, are required to have a Ph.D. or comparable professional certification. Scholars must be employed full-time at an academic or research institution. Grants are not intended to fund dissertation research. Up to five grants of $45,000 will be awarded for projects of one year. The Dissertation Fellowship Program in Retirement Income and Disability Insurance Research provides funding opportunities for doctoral candidates to pursue cutting-edge research on retirement issues. Applicants are required to be enrolled in a qualified doctoral program at a United States university; have completed all coursework for a Ph.D. by the time funding starts; and have a dissertation advisor and/or committee. Doctoral candidates from all academic disciplines are encouraged to submit a proposal. Up to seven fellowships of $28,000 will be awarded. Priority research areas for both programs include Social Security and disability insurance, macroeconomic analyses of Social Security, wealth and retirement income, program interactions, international research, and demographic research.

On September 13, WBI will be hosting its 3rd OEA Collider Event, this time on the topic of Human Performance Enhancement. Please block your calendars from 1:30 till 3:30 and plan to join us to learn more about the opportunities within this massive market space. For the purposes of this project, we're defining Human Performance Enhancement like this: As the world becomes more complex, the demands on human performance continue to increase. Athletic endeavors, military requirements, continuing independence into one's later years are all examples of market-driven needs for human performance enhancement. Strength, speed, endurance, vigilance, multi-tasking, mental-acuity, and recovery are all enhancement opportunities of interest. Formal evaluation of blue papers will begin on approximately 17 October 2016. Wright Brothers Institute continues to work diligently on our pilot project to refine a commercialization process for regional innovators. In March we had an OEA Collider event focused on the Precision Agriculture market which has resulted in 8 Blue Paper submissions and 2 on-going projects to commercialize several of the concepts explained in those blue papers. We're making significant progress toward providing real market solutions with a combination of several innovative technologies!

Calling all postdoctoral trainees, graduate students, and junior faculty from geriatric programs, aging institutes, and medical schools: submit your late breaker abstract for the opportunity for a travel award funded by NIA. GSA will select up to 10 travel awards, each in the amount of $900 and complimentary registration to attend and participate in the workshop for faculty and research fellows will be made to help defray the cost of attending GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting.  All attendees are expected to stay and participate in the entire workshop. In September, Miami received notice from the government that our new F&A rates are: 44.5% for On Campus Organized Research 44.0% On Campus Sponsored Instruction 39.0% On Campus Other Sponsored Activities 26.0% Off Campus All Programs These rates are effective beginning September 1, 2014. Awards received beginning in September and all proposal submissions going forward will be required to use the new rates.

The Tufts Health Plan Foundation is accepting Letters of Inquiry from nonprofit organizations for projects that champion communities as they improve the quality of life for all citizens across the lifespan. The foundation will consider policy/advocacy projects in the areas of built environment, transportation, housing, social and civic participation and inclusion, employment, communication and information, and community support and health services. Projects should be collaborative and involve participants from all community arenas, with a focus on policy and advocacy activities that move communities toward age-friendly status.

The PRARP Quality of Life Research Award (QUAL) mechanism was first offered in FY13. Since then, 38 QUAL applications have been received, and 16 have been recommended for funding. The intent of the research funded through this award is to (1) support research to alleviate, stabilize, or characterize the symptoms or deficits common to TBI and AD/ADRD, and (2) reduce the burden of care on the caregiver for individuals living with the common symptoms of TBI and AD/ADRD. Research may be proposed to either facet of the intent. Both are equally important. As part of the research strategy, all applications must include cognitive, neuropsychological, or otherwise appropriate measures. The FY17 PRARP QUAL is open to Principal Investigators (PIs) at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent) from any field or discipline. As part of the application, the PI should demonstrate that the study team has experience in both TBI and AD/ADRD research. Preliminary data, while not required, are encouraged. Preliminary data may come from the PI's published work, pilot data, or from peer-reviewed literature. Applications should also address how all of the included study measures address the research strategy and the study's hypothesis or hypotheses. The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 PRARP QUAL will not exceed $500,000. The maximum period of performance is 3 years.

We want to learn about solutions that have worked in other countries to address social isolation across all ages and life stages, so that we can strengthen social connection in the United States. RWJF is looking for applicants who represent organizations from a wide range of fields and disciplines-both within and outside the health sector. We encourage proposals from both U.S.-based applicants to adapt an overseas idea, and from international applicants with ideas that could work in the United States. Participants in the BPN are responsible for conducting all studies that involve disease- or target-specific assays, models, and other research tools and receive funding for all activities to be conducted in their own laboratories. In addition, applicants will collaborate with NIH-funded consultants and can augment their project with NIH contract research organizations (CROs) that specialize in medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, formulations development, chemical synthesis including under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Phase I clinical testing. Projects can enter either at the Discovery stage, to optimize promising hit compounds through medicinal chemistry, or at the Development stage, to advance a development candidate through Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling toxicology studies and phase I clinical testing. Projects that enter at the Discovery stage and meet their milestones may continue on through Development. BPN awardee Institutions retain their assignment of IP rights and gain assignment of IP rights from the BPN contractors (and thereby control the patent prosecution and licensing negotiations) for drug candidates developed in this program.

The Cigna Foundation, the charitable arm of the Cigna Corporation and its subsidiaries, supports organizations that share its commitment to enhancing the health of individuals and families, and the well-being of their communities, with a special focus on those communities where Cigna employees live and work. The foundation focuses its funding in four areas: promoting wellness by building awareness, helping people manage their health challenges, and making health services available and affordable for all; expanding opportunities by reaching across barriers to tap the talents of every person; developing leaders by supporting the type of community service that gives talented individuals the experience to become future leaders; and embracing communities by connecting neighbors to create networks to address complex social and environmental challenges. There is no maximum or minimum grant. However, a typical first-time grant is $5,000.

The Administration for Community Living (ACL)/U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA) is providing this competitive grant opportunity to eligible entities for the purpose of establishing and providing ongoing technical assistance and support and build upon past advancements and innovations in serving this older LGBT individuals through new, efficient and sustainable approaches for ensuring high quality and culturally competent service delivery. Under this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), ACL/AoA plans to fund one (1) cooperative agreement at a federal funding level of up to $295,540 per year for two (2) years, pending the availability of Federal funds. Applicants to this FOA must demonstrate the capacity to work at the national level to provide training, technical assistance and support to aging network entities (State Units on Aging, Area Agencies on Aging, service providers), LGBT organizations, and older LGBT consumers. Further, applicants must demonstrate the support and active involvement of a range of stakeholders sufficiently broad so as to ensure that all requirements outlined in this FOA are addressed.

Since 1985, the John A. Hartford Foundation authorized nearly $425 million in grants to improve the geriatric skills of current and future health professionals and redesign health care delivery. Foundation grants currently support over 100 programs that span the spectrum of academic and clinical training. These programs increase the nation's capacity and ability to serve older adults by engaging doctors, nurses, and social workers at all the stages of their formation and professional growth. In order to maximize the Foundation's impact on the health and the well-being of the nation's elders, grants are made in two priority areas. Academic Geriatrics and Training The Foundation supports efforts in selected academic medical centers and other health settings to strengthen the geriatric training of America 's physicians, nurses and social workers. Integrating and Improving Services The Foundation supports a limited number of sustainable efforts to improve and integrate the system of services needed by elders and their effectiveness. The emphasis is on nationally replicable models.

The participating NIH Institutes and Centers invite applications to address both the origins and the effects of low level chronic inflammation in the onset and progression of age-related diseases and conditions. Chronic inflammation, as defined by elevated levels of both local and systemic cytokines and other pro-inflammatory factors, is a hallmark of aging in virtually all higher animals including humans and is recognized as a major risk factor for developing age-associated diseases. The spectra of phenotypes capable of generating low-level chronic inflammation and their defining mediators are not clear. Further, a clear understanding of how chronic inflammation compromises the integrity of cells or tissues leading to disease progression is lacking. The role of dietary supplements and/or nutritional status in chronic inflammation in age-related disease is also poorly studied. Thus, there is a critical need to establish the knowledge base that will allow a better understanding of the complex interplay between inflammation and age-related diseases. Applications submitted to this FOA should aim to clarify the molecular and cellular basis for the increase in circulating inflammatory factors with aging, and/or shed light on the cause-effect relationship between inflammation and disease, using pre-clinical (animal or cellular based) models.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide dissertation awards in all areas of research within NIA's strategic priorities to increase diversity of the scientific research workforce engaged in research on aging and aging-related health conditions.

The purpose of this FOA is to support an initial series of activities over a 3-year period to build the foundation for enhanced collaborations across NIA's 6 centers programs. These collaborations are intended to leverage NIA's substantial investments by fostering the development of novel interdisciplinary efforts in aging research. This opportunity will provide resources to build additional infrastructure and establish specific collaborative activities that could include, but are not limited to, information and data exchange, meetings and conferences, pilot studies, research opportunities for beginning investigators, visiting scholar programs, dissemination, and other collaborative efforts. The successful awardee will involve all 6 centers programs.

In May of 2013 the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), with input from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), held an Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias Conference in response to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease. The Conference brought together national and international experts and members of the public to develop research priorities for accelerating the development of therapies for the Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRDs). The ADRD 2013 research recommendations that resulted are part of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease. This FOA addresses the National Plan's highest priority for human-based research on vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID): to develop noninvasive markers of key vascular processes related to VCID in Alzheimer's and related dementias. The research program initiated here underscores the need to facilitate the development of biomarkers to improve the efficiency and outcome of Phase II and III clinical trials and advance therapeutic development. These companion FOAs (RFA-NS-16-019, i.e. this FOA; and RFA-NS-16-020 for the Biomarkers Development Projects) establish the Small Vessel VCID Biomarkers Consortium, and are focused on small vessel (i.e. arterioles, capillaries, and venules) VCID in vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), vascular dementia, and all mixed and pure cognitive impairment and dementias with contributing small vessel vascular disease, including such as commonly occurs in sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Awards funded under these two FOAs create a consortium and infrastructure to complete development projects as well as planning that will enable follow-up activities (to be carried out under future separate funding; for example large scale multi-site validation studies and other activities, for future FDA qualification of small vessel VCID biomarkers and use in clinical trials).

The purpose of this FOA is to invite: 1) descriptive studies to identify putative juvenile protective factors, 2) experimental studies to test hypotheses about their effects on aging and 3) translational studies to characterize potential beneficial and adverse effects of maintaining or modulating the level of juvenile protective factors in adult life. Juvenile protective factors (JPFs), intrinsic to an immature organism, help to maintain or enhance certain physiological functions across all or some stages of postnatal development (i.e., segment of the life span between birth and sexual maturity), but diminish or disappear as the organism transitions from one maturational stage to the next. The loss or diminution of JPFs after a given stage of postnatal development or at time of sexual maturity may contribute to the onset of deleterious aging changes (e.g., compromised stem cell function and reparative capacity) across adulthood. This FOA is uniquely focused on animal and clinical studies which involve comparisons between juvenile versus adult states or between stages of postnatal development to identify putative JPFs and their effects on aging. 

Leidos will match high-scoring, unfunded National Institutes of Health (NIH) proposals with private biomedical foundations and/or industries seeking to fund promising research. Foundations will have access to peer-reviewed research proposals that directly relate to their funding priorities, industry will have access to a rich pipeline of early stage and translational research proposals that align with its priorities, while applicants with strong research proposals will be provided with a second opportunity to secure funding. The foundations, industries, applicants, and NIH all will benefit from this synergy.

CAREER: The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations. Such activities should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research. NSF encourages submission of CAREER proposals from junior faculty members at all CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.
