The AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science, established in 2010, recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their contribution to public engagement with science activities. A monetary prize of $5,000, a commemorative plaque, complimentary registration to the AAAS Annual Meeting, and reimbursement for reasonable hotel and travel expenses to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting to receive the prize are given to the recipient. Nominee must be an early-career scientist or engineer in academia, government or industry actively conducting research in any scientific discipline (including social sciences and medicine).  "Early career" is defined as an individual who has been in his/her current field for less than seven years and pre-tenure or job equivalent. Post-doctoral students are eligible for this award. Nominee will have demonstrated excellence in his/her contribution to public engagement with science activities, with a focus on interactive dialogue between the individual and a non-scientific, public audience(s). Types of public engagement activities might include: informal science education, public outreach, public policy, and/or science communication activities, such as mass media, public dialogue, radio, TV and film, science café, science exhibit, science fair, and social and online media.

The 2017 Building Trust and Mutual Respect to Improve Health Care call for proposals (CFP) will fund empirical research studies to help us better understand how to build trust and mutual respect to meet vulnerable patients' health care needs. For this CFP, we would define vulnerable populations in a number of different ways, including the economically disadvantaged, diverse racial and ethnic populations, the uninsured, older adults, homeless individuals, and people with complex health and social needs (including people with acute behavioral health needs or multiple chronic conditions). Proposals most closely aligned with the scope of this CFP will go beyond documenting the problem to generate findings that will be generalizable and have broad application across health systems and the field. Eligibility and Selection Criteria · Researchers, as well as practitioners in the public and private sector working with researchers, are eligible to submit proposals through their organizations. Projects may be generated from disciplines including health services research; economics; sociology; program evaluation; political science; public policy; psychology; public health; public administration; law; business administration; or other related fields. · The Foundation may give preference to applicants that are either public entities or nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and are not private foundations or Type III supporting organizations. · The Foundation may require additional documentation. Applicant organizations must be based in the United States or its territories.

This NOFO fulfills activities described in the Building Our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act PL115-406. This announcement will fund Public Health Centers of Excellence (PHCOE) to support nationwide implementation of the 25 actions in the Healthy Brain Initiative's State and Local Public Health Partnerships to Address Dementia: The 2018-2023 Road Map (RM) [https://www.cdc.gov/aging/healthybrain/roadmap.htm] across the United States. Each PHCOE will choose one topic-specific area for their focus from the following list: Dementia Risk Reduction, Early Detection of Dementia, and Dementia Caregiving. The activities for each PHCOE will align directly with the actions identified in the RM for each topic area. Recipients will focus on identifying, translating and disseminating promising research findings and evidence-informed best practices, including those that address social determinants of health, for nationwide systematic public health uptake by state, local, tribal and other public health programs. PHCOEs will collaborate with CDC, other national partners and state, local and tribal health entities to ensure maximum impact and reach.

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is seeking applications from qualified organizations for Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) grants. These centers will conduct high quality research and help translate scientific discoveries into practice for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence that support NCIPC’s priorities and mission. ICRCs are expected to blend Outreach, Training and Education, and Research activities into a program to reduce the number, risk, and public health impact of injury and violence in the U.S. The over-arching goals for the NCIPC ICRC program are to: Build the scientific base for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence. Integrate, in the context of a national program, professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, criminal justice, and engineering to perform research and provided technical expertise in order to prevent and control injuries and/or violence more effectively. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves intervention development or translation of effective programs among individuals, organizations, or communities. Provide technical assistance to injury and/or violence prevention and control programs in their geographic region, including other researchers; universities; medical institutions; community groups; state and local government agencies, public health agencies; and policy makers. Act as sources of injury and/or violence prevention and control information for their constituents and stakeholders at the local, state, tribal, national, and global levels.

Founded in 1972, the Tourette Association of America has emerged as the premier national nonprofit organization working to make life better for all people affected by Tourette and tic disorders. The association advances its work by raising public awareness and fostering social acceptance; working to advance scientific understanding, treatment options, and care; educating professionals to better serve the needs of children, adults, and families challenged by Tourette and tic disorders; advocating for public policies and services that promote positive school, work, and social environments; providing help, hope, and a supportive community across the nation; and empowering its community to deal with the complexities of this spectrum of disorders. To that end, grants of up to $150,000 over two years will be awarded for basic and clinical studies related to any aspect of Tourette syndrome. To be eligible, investigators are required to have an advanced degree such as a PhD, MD, or equivalent or be an allied professional with an advanced degree in a related field. Investigators from nonprofit and for-profit organizations are eligible to apply. Pre-proposals must be received no later than November 1, 2017. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application by February 15, 2018.

Scientists and patient advocacy groups often use a series of photos, commissioned by NEI some thirty years ago, when they wish to depict the visual experience of patients suffering from blinding diseases. At the time they were created, these images reflected the field's understanding of visual perception for such patients. But the field has advanced considerably since then, and these static images are considered overly simplistic, inaccurate, and generally unsatisfactory. At the same time, technology has evolved to where it is possible to use video and virtual reality to more authentically demonstrate (or even simulate) the experience of have a blinding disease. As part of the efforts of the NEI 50th Anniversary Planning Committee, the institute seeks the support of experts in blinding diseases, visual psychophysics, and video/virtual reality production to create a scientifically accurate and clinically authentic blindness simulation "experience" that can be used for education, public advocacy, and research purposes and a series of short videos that can be posted online for education and public outreach.

By establishing effective public-private partnerships, this SPARC initiative allows supported investigators to have access to existing neuromodulation technology to explore new indications. A number of device manufacturers have entered into partnership agreements with the NIH to make their neuromodulation technology, consisting of implantable devices with recording and/or stimulation capabilities, available to SPARC's supported clinical investigators (see Device Portal for a list of companies and available technologies). The specific goal of this FOA is to promote the pre-clinical development of these technologies, in support of a new market indication, towards enabling an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) submission for a future pilot clinical study. Awarded projects of this FOA that fully reach their pre-clinical testing milestones will be eligible for further support, subject to a subsequent FOA, to conduct a pilot clinical study. The expectation is that these pilot clinical studies will provide the initial proof-of-principle demonstrations in humans that will motivate the additional studies needed in pursuing FDA approval as a labeled indication.

The purpose of the ADI-SSS program is to provide grants to public and private entities that are operating within existing, dementia-capable, long term services and supports systems and are committed to serving populations with the most need and living with or at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and their caregivers. Successful applicants will propose services designed to address the needs of each of the three service gap areas identified in the Funding Opportunity Announcement. The grantees benefit from targeted technical assistance provided by the ACL's National Alzheimer’s and Dementia Resource Center.

The Next Generation Award recognizes SfN chapter members who have made outstanding contributions to public communication, outreach, and education about neuroscience.

Objective To help trainees initiate careers in cardiovascular and stroke research while obtaining significant research results under the supervision of a sponsor or mentor; supports individuals before they're ready for some stage of independent research. Science Focus Research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease and stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems, including multidisciplinary efforts.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) is a Presidential award established by the White House in 1995. The purpose of the award is to recognize U.S. citizens or permanent residents and U.S. organizations that have demonstrated excellence in mentoring individuals from groups that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and workforce. Groups that are underrepresented in STEM include women, people with disabilities, underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, as well as individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds and some geographic regions such as urban and rural areas. The PAESMEM program is administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Nominations, including self-nominations, are invited for Individual and Organizational PAESMEM awards. Individuals and organizations in all public and private sectors are eligible including industry, academia, primary and secondary education, military and government, non-profit organizations, and foundations. Nominations are encouraged from all geographical regions in the U.S., its territories or possessions, particularly jurisdictions designated by Congress under NSF's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to encourage research on the basic biology of the intervertebral disc and on the molecular mechanisms underlying intervertebral disc degeneration. Back/spinal pain, which is a major public health concern in the United States, is strongly associated with intervertebral disc degeneration. Acute low back pain that is serious enough to disrupt daily routines affects about 70 percent of adults sometime during their lives. In the vast majority of patients, low back pain resolves within a few weeks with conservative medical management. 

This Dear Colleague Letter is to alert all basic science and engineering communities, including education researchers, to the Foundation's interest in receiving proposals that, while investigating fundamental questions, seek to pose and test hypotheses that could inform research in forensic sciences. The interest spans both disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. Additionally, the wide public interest in forensics can provide an effective vehicle for basic research in science education. International partnerships, where appropriate, are encouraged, as are synergistic interactions with forensics and/or law enforcement agencies and organizations. Proposals for workshops to explore fundamental science drivers and their relevance to forensics are also welcome. 

The ADAA Career Development Travel Awards are given to help early career professionals who have a research interest in anxiety disorders and depression, such as basic and clinical neurobiology, psychopharmacology, anxiety comorbidities, clinical psychology, genetics, neuroimaging, epidemiology, comparative effectiveness, multicultural issues, public health, as well as other areas. The awards also familiarize and engage aspiring professionals with the membership and work of the association.

AFTD provides support for highly innovative basic and clinical research in frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) including: behavioral variant FTD, primary progressive aphasia, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal syndrome and FTD-ALS. The Pilot Grant is designed to seed original projects, (one clinical research project and one basic science project*) with the goal of generating preliminary data toward a larger grant application to the NIH or other public or private agencies concerned with this important medical and social problem.

This limited competition FOA invites a renewal application for the next 5-year cycle of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI).  ADNI's purpose is to develop a multisite, longitudinal, prospective, naturalistic study of normal cognitive aging, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and early Alzheimer's disease as a public domain research resource to facilitate the scientific evaluation of neuroimaging and other biomarkers for the onset and progression of MCI and Alzheimer's disease.

The Scolnick Prize is designed to recognize outstanding advances in the field of neuroscience. The prize, which is endowed through a gift from Merck to the institute, consists of a $100,000 award, plus an inscribed gift. In addition, the recipient will present a public lecture at the McGovern Institute in spring 2015. A gala dinner for the recipient and invited guests follows the prize lecture. Candidates for the award must be nominated by individuals who are affiliated with universities, hospitals, medicals schools, or research institutes, and who possess a background in neuroscience. Self-nomination is not permitted

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement is to support a practice-based research network in the United States to transform the development, delivery, and sustainability of evidence-based mental health practices and services. Through a research consortium embedded within large and integrated healthcare delivery systems (public and/or commercial systems) that serve representative populations, this Network would result in a continuously learning healthcare system as defined by the Institute of Medicine, to create a continuous cycle or feedback loop in which scientific evidence informs clinical practice while data gathered from clinical practice and administrative sources inform scientific investigation.
