The over-arching goal of this NIH Blueprint R25 program is to support educational activities thatenhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development, Research Experiences, and Mentoring Activities. The fully integrated educational activities should prepare undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds nationally underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral sciences to enter Ph.D. degree programs in the neurosciences. To accomplish this goal, this initiative will provide institutional awards to develop neuroscience research education programs comprised of collaborative partnerships integrated across different educational institution types. Each partnership must include: a) one or more institutions that have substantial enrollment of diverse undergraduates from populations underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, b) a research-intensive institution that has an established neuroscience or neuroscience-related program, c) integrated curriculum/academic enhancement and research training activities designed to increase participants' preparation to enter doctoral programs in the neurosciences, and d) well-described plans to provide early communication and interaction between participating students and graduate neuroscience programs across the country.

The Society for Neuroscience, the world's largest organization of scientists and physicians dedicated to understanding the brain and the nervous system, works to advance scientific exchange, support the neuroscience community, educate and engage the public, and advocate for the field. In support of this mission, SfN is accepting applications for the Swartz Prize for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience. Supported by the Swartz Foundation, the prize honors an individual whose activities have produced a significant cumulative contribution to theoretical models or computational methods in neuroscience or who has made a particularly noteworthy recent advance in theoretical models or computational neuroscience.

The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience supports innovative research designed to bring science closer to the day when diseases of the brain can be accurately diagnosed, prevented, and treated. To that end, the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience invites Letters of Intent for its 2018 McKnight Technological Innovations in Neuroscience awards. The program encourages and supports scientists working on the development of novel and creative approaches to the understanding of brain function. McKnight is interested in how a new technology may be used to monitor, manipulate, analyze, or model brain function at any level, from the molecular to the entire organism. Technology may take any form, from biochemical tools to instruments to software and mathematical approaches. Because the program seeks to advance and enlarge the range of technologies available to the neurosciences, research based primarily on existing techniques will not be considered. A goal of the Technological Innovations awards is to foster collaboration between the neurosciences and other disciplines; therefore, collaborative and cross-disciplinary applications are explicitly invited.

The NINDS recognizes the unique and compelling need to promote diversity in participation in neuroscience research and expects these efforts to diversify the neuroscience research workforce to lead to the recruitment of the most talented researchers from all groups. The purpose of the NINDS Faculty Development Award to Promote Diversity in Neuroscience Research is to provide junior faculty support and protected time (up to three years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in neuroscience research. The goal of the NINDS K01 is to diversify the pool of independent neuroscience research investigators and to enhance the probability of success in obtaining independent NIH or other independent research support. Individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research are eligible for support under this award if they have doctoral research degrees (Ph.D. or equivalent) and are in the first 3 years of a faculty position at the time of award.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for Silvio O. Conte Centers for Basic Neuroscience or Translational Mental Health Research. The NIMH seeks teams of researchers working at different levels of analysis and employing integrative, novel, and creative experimental approaches to address high-risk, high-impact questions in basic neuroscience research, or in translational research with the primary objectives of: (a) advancing the state of the science in basic brain and behavior research that will uncover and dissect the underlying mechanisms that will ultimately provide the foundation for understanding mental disorders; (b) supporting the integration and translation of basic and clinical neuroscience research on severe mental illnesses; and/or (c) advancing our understanding of the neurobehavioral developmental mechanisms and trajectories of psychopathology that begin in childhood and adolescence. The Conte Centers program is intended to support interdisciplinary basic neuroscience or translational research demonstrating an extraordinary level of synergy, integration, and potential for advancing the state of the field. This program is intended only for projects that could not be achieved using other, more standard grant mechanisms. The Conte Centers program also provides an opportunity to establish interdisciplinary basic neuroscience or translational research experiences for students and post doctorates.

The Neuroscience Scholars Program (NSP) is a three-year fellowship administered by the Society for Neuroscience to enhance career development and professional networking opportunities for underrepresented diverse undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in neuroscience. The program, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, provides scholars with: Annual stipend for enrichment activities outside the scholar's home institution Support for and annual meeting travel expenses Access to annual meeting workshops, courses, and events Complimentary SfN meeting registration and abstract fee waivers Complimentary SfN membership and subscription to The Journal of Neuroscience online Mentoring Other benefits include opportunities to network, expand professional contacts, and acquire professional skills.

The Neuroscience Prize honors scientists for major discoveries that have advanced the understanding of the nervous system. The Prize, established in 2004, is an unrestricted cash award of $500,000, a gold medal inscribed with the recipient's name, and a citation describing the achievement for which the recipient is being honored. It is awarded each year to a person or persons chosen by a distinguished advisory board of neuroscience experts from nominations that are received from around the world. Nominations for the Neuroscience Prize are invited annually and may be submitted by individuals, organizations, and institutions that are active in or have an appreciation for contemporary neuroscience research and study.

The purpose of the FOA is to invite applications for mentoring and professional activities to advance the careers and neuroscience development of diverse neuroscience researchers. The goal of the NINDS Neuroscience Development for Advancing the Careers of a Diverse Research Workforce (NDACDRW) is to support mission relevant development and/or implementation of programs to: (1) increase the pool of Ph.D.-level research scientists from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research who are neuroscience researchers- participation is limited to graduate, post-doctoral and/or junior-faculty career levels only; and (2) facilitate career advancement/transition of the participants to the next step of their neuroscience careers. NINDS support for R25 program relies equally on scientific merit and programmatic considerations. Consequently, we recommend that potential applicants contact program officials at NINDS before preparing an application. NINDS will not support projects if they do not fulfill current programmatic priorities at NINDS.

To this end, the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience invites applications for the 2014 McKnight Scholar Awards. These awards were established to encourage emerging neuroscientists to focus on disorders of learning and memory. Applicants for the McKnight Scholar Awards must demonstrate interest in solving important problems in relevant areas of neuroscience, including the translation of basic research to clinical neuroscience. Awards are given to exceptional young scientists who hold the M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree and who are in the early stages of establishing an independent laboratory and research career. Traditionally, successful candidates have held faculty positions for at least one year. Up to six McKnight Scholars each will receive three years of support, beginning July 1, 2014.

JSPTPN programs are intended to be 2 years in duration and students may only be appointed to this training grant during the first 2 years of their graduate research training. The primary objective is to prepare students to be outstanding scientists equipped to pursue careers in neuroscience.

The McGovern Institute for Brain Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was established in 2000 by Patrick J. McGovern and Lore Harp McGovern, with the goal of improving human welfare, communication, and understanding through their support for neuroscience research. The institute has announced a call for nominations for its twelfth annual Edward M. Scolnick Prize in Neuroscience. Now in its fifteenth year, the Scolnick Prize is designed to recognize outstanding advances in the field of neuroscience. The prize, which is endowed through a gift from Merck to the McGovern Institute, consists of a $150,000 award, plus an inscribed gift. In addition, the recipient will present a public lecture at the McGovern Institute in spring 2018. A gala dinner for the recipient and invited guests follows the prize lecture. Candidates for the award must be nominated by individuals affiliated with universities, hospitals, medicals schools, or research institutes, with a background in neuroscience. Self-nomination is not permitted.

The New York Stem Cell Foundation is soliciting applications from early career investigators for awards in neuroscience. The main goal of this initiative is to foster truly innovative and excellent science with the probability for transforming the field of neuroscience research. Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals in the fundamental areas of developmental, cellular, cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, broadly interpreted. Proposals do not need to be related to stem cells.

Would you or a neuroscience colleague like to develop and teach a course on neuroethics at your institution? The University of Pennsylvania is ready to help, by offering Short-term Visiting Fellowships for Teaching Neuroethics. This summer the Penn Center for Neuroscience & Society will host 16 college and university professors with primary expertise in neuroscience for a week-long intensive course on "neuroethics," that is, the ethical, legal and societal implications of neuroscience. Through reading, lecture and discussion, fellows will acquire a strong grasp of the core issues of neuroethics, as well discuss with experienced instructors the design of neuroethics syllabus, selection of readings and implementation of learning activities. Work space, hotel rooms, and most meals will be provided.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is issued as an initiative of the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research.  The Neuroscience Blueprint is a collaborative framework through which 15 NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices jointly support neuroscience-related research, with the aim of accelerating discoveries and reducing the burden of nervous system disorders (for further information, see http://neuroscienceblueprint.nih.gov/).  The Neuroscience Blueprint is supporting a Lifespan Human Connectome Project (L-HCP) to extend the Human Connectome Project (HCP) (http://www.neuroscienceblueprint.nih.gov/connectome) to map connectivity in the developing, adult, and aging human brain.  The goal of this FOA is solicit grant applications that propose to extend the experimental protocols developed through the HCP to middle-age and elderly adults to investigate the structural and functional changes that occur in the brain during typical aging.  A companion FOA is soliciting applications that apply the HCP protocols to children and adolescents to explore changes that occur during typical development.
