02/16/10, Peer Instruction in Large Classes - Almanac, Vol. 56, No. 22 - 1 views

  •
"I start with a brief explanation of the next concept or topic. I then present the students with a short puzzle or problem incorporating this concept. The students discuss the problem in small groups of 2-4, and then vote using polling hardware or "clickers" similar to TV remotes. After everyone has voted, the results appear on the screen at the front of the class. A well-chosen problem is one for which about 70% of the students get the right answer"

Genetics Web Lab Directory - 2 views

  •
Good example of a 'learning Object' - animations and small units on Genetics
  •
This is a great place to learn genetics, I tried numerous modules and they all work when you enter the web module, however there were no instructor instructions or student instructions on these tools,... only a screen stating it was under construction, so I would recommend that if you use this site you write clear instructions for your students. I plan to use the site with the nurse practitioners in the Spring. I will require the Genetic counseling one for this group. I hope that they will be intrigued and try some of the other modules, which they may have to do in order to correctly do the genetic counseling.

The work of this group culminated in this resource for faculty members who want to enhance their ability to plan effective online learning experiences for students. This guide serves as a user-friendly and practical tool to assist faculty in planning and implementing online courses."

Peer Instruction - 0 views

  • Lectures are interspersed with conceptual questions, called ConcepTests, designed to expose common difficulties in understanding the material. The students are given one to two minutes to think about the question and formulate their own answers; they then spend two to three minutes discussing their answers in groups of three to four, attempting to reach consensus on the correct answer. This process forces the students to think through the arguments being developed,

Giving Students Audio-Visual Feeback - Jing Blog - 2 views

  •
Another example of using Jing, a previous iNET featured tool, to give student feedback. Jing is a free and simple to use screenrecording application, which is perfect for recording short 'screencasts', tutorials, instructions, and annoucements.
  •
I did similar screen casts when I taught graphic design. It was so much better than textually critiquing something very visual...and it took less time. The students liked the video because it helped them "See" the things they could improve upon and they liked hearing the tone of the voice which helped eliminate any misinterpretations of the critique...meaning I wasn't out to get them.

Free Reports | Faculty Focus - 1 views

  •
Attached is a document from Faculty Focus on teaching with technology. These documents are collections of short pieces on the particular topic … and Faculty Focus has LOADS of topics. You can find that list of topics at http://www.facultyfocus.com/free-reports/. All reports are free, but in order to download them, you have to register (i.e., enter your e-mail address and create a password). Once you register, you will get regular announcements from Faculty Focus when new reports come out. Sometimes the e-mails are about reports you've already been notified of, but most of the time it's new stuff. Well, now that you know about this great resource, I will assume that those of you who are interested will register and get your own announcements. I, therefore, will not be cluttering up your Inbox with any more of these things … though you can expect notices when other kinds of things come out that might be of interest to you. Theresa M. A good manual for digital storytelling from Storycenter.org - 2 views

  •
This cookbook gives instructions when seem straightforward. I plan to use this in the spring 2010 semester as an activity in N6101 Nursing Theory. Activity will be to do a digital story that focuses on a concept, similiar to a concept analysis, however, as a digital media product that captures the essence of a concept or phenomena found in nursing.
