How to integrate Bloom's Taxonomy of apps into the classroom: Bloom's Taxonomy is by no means the best or only way to categorize websites, apps or other educational tools. However, I often find that for my purposes, it is a really nice way to organize tools so that I can find them later. It also keeps me (and my students) thinking about the learning process and keeps us all from getting stuck in a one-type-of-learning rut. Bloom's is also extraordinarily handy for categorizing apps that don't fit neatly into a subject matter or that fall into several different subject categories. In the apps, I have given you a little guide. If an app cost money, I've added a $$ on the app. The others are free. The free apps are just as wonderful as some of the paid!

Technology has been with us since I've been a teacher. I started my career succumbing to the alluring aroma of the Gestetner (Ditto/Banda/spirit duplicator) machine and its purple stained sheet. Then the photocopier arrived and we didn't think it could get any better than making copies of a page for every child. The reality is that many teachers still rely heavily on the immediacy and simplicity of the photocopied black line master provided by someone else. It is far less confusing that all that technical mum jumbo introduced with the computer in the 90s.

A Kiwi VLN (think PLN) for teachers working with ipods/ipads, could be a good place to bounce ideas, share resources etc

Part social network, part goal setting/sharing network could be useful with our Grade 2-5's? What do people think?

Diigo and Prezi I think that diigo is wonderful. It is such a good way to organise your bookmarks. It's also a great way to collaborate on resources. I often find great websites that my colleagues may find useful, though I'm never quite sure if they are worthy of clogging their inboxes. With diigo I can just add to a group list and then everyone can access them. Getting something like that up and running is definitely a goal for next year. The head librarian at my school is also very excited about diigo and I have drawn her a very messy diagram of how diigo groups can work. In order to tick two things of my list I thought I would use prezi to put together a clear explanation of diigo.

S.O.L.O. Stands For: S tructure of O bserved L earning O utcomes It is a taxonomy - a collection of controlled vocabulary terms organized into a hierarchical structure. Each term in a taxonomy is in one or more parent/child (broader/narrower) relationships to other terms in the taxonomy. et.afsnet.org/glossary.html It was developed by Biggs J and COLLIS K,1982. It describes 5 levels of increasing complexity in a student's understanding of a subject, through five stages, and it is claimed to be applicable to any subject area.

Jeff again! The 2009-2010 school year ended for me early today and I'm just wrapping up a few loose ends before I head into vacation mode for the summer. I did want to release the Free PDF of the Web-Based Portfolio series I've been working on for the past couple of months. I've taken the four blog posts and put them into this PDF that you can download and use if you would like.

Perhaps my favourite classroom tool of the past year is My StoryMaker from the Carnegie Libraries of Pittsburgh. It's great fun and has never failed to entertain me or my students - always the sign of a good activity. Most importantly, it really gets students thinking about language and focuses them on producing creative, quality work.
