Non-Fiction Resource Books for the Primary Years Programme of Inquiry - 0 views

  •
This is a list of books which I hope will be a useful resource for teachers and librarians for the Primary Years Programme of Inquiry of the International Baccalaureate. I have tried to choose books which do not have a narrow focus but which are trans-disciplinary in concept. Please contact me if you would like recommendations for books on specific subject areas, and at a particular age level. The list will gradually be added to and improved as I have time to add to it and as I get more feedback from teachers and librarians. I have divided the list into the six organizing themes (though I realise that there can be considerable overlap between various themes) and have made up separate lists for fiction and non-fiction titles. I have given an indication of reading levels to each of the titles. Titles newly included in this updated list are marked *

Some very interesting ideas from a language teacher After writing a few reflections on the units I covered last term, I realized that summative reflection could become a tedious chore that doesn't serve much of purpose. This term I would like to work on writing shorter more formative reflections to help me stay connected with my units, and that will hopefully illicit some useful feedback from you, dear reader.

Smart-Kit: Online Puzzles & Games - 0 views

As the self-styled 'puzzle playground' Smart-Kit.com offers plenty of opportunities for your students to explore and flex their mental muscles. There are some great games here that really set it apart from the other sites on this list. For instance, the physics games are very good, the adventure games are taxing, and the quick thinking games really give students the opportunity to perform under pressure. There are even some IQ test questions here that can be used as problems of the day or extension work. Some of my favorite brain games on this site are Truck Loader, Trafficator, and the amazing Little Wheel. Read more: http://www.brighthub.com/education/k-12/articles/106947.aspx#ixzz1EGaRJ6xx

Online kids brain games - 0 views

Another great site that is well worth your time is Kidopo. This educational site has an amazing collection of brain games that will keep your students engaged for hours. As with everything else on Kidopo, the games are specifically chosen because they are student friendly and appropriate for use at school. Again, all the games are very well produced, and the interest level they generate is always high. Try Fling, Zoo Escape, Mechanics, or Prizma Puzzle 2 with your students and you will quickly see how hard their brains can really work! Today I had my 3rd class of Pre-Kindergarteners. I decided today I would approach the whole lesson as a series of questions. Rather than explain to the students what they would be doing (my first approach) or model what they would be doing (my second approach), I tried to encourage them to explore the tools and when I noticed students who were not using different colours I asked them: "Do you know how to change the colour of the lines?" If the answer was yes, I let them get on with it assuming they would change colour if they wanted to. If the answer was no I asked, "Do you want to know how to change the colour of the lines?", if the answer was no I let them continue in their own way, if the answer was yes I showed them how to do it. In the same way if I noticed students who were drawing lots of similar shapes I simply asked, "Do you know any other shapes?"

The idea of the Teachers Animation Toolkit is to provide templates for a few generic types of flash animation. The links below take you to the animations together with some notes on adapting and using them, Flash document files (.fla) and any other associated files such as xml and text variable files.
