This is a great article about the disconnect between music we teach in school and the music our students listen to. This discusses ways to help make music meaningful for all students.
  •
This article discusses the "real" issue that classically trained music teachers face in trying to engage students in music; holding classical and/or jazz up as the "legitimate" forms of musical, or recognizing the value of the music that students listen to and enjoy in their daily lives.

Fakebook - 0 views

After reading about this in chapter 5 this week, I want to use this project with my students.  They can create this page for a composer and include pictures, quotes, his/her contemporaries and recordings.
  •
This website allows users to create fake facebook profiles. This is a great tool to get students interested in sharing information they have learned about historical figures. This site could be used to share information on composers, choreographers, musicians, etc. There is also a database of profiles of various figures throughout history.

As a composer and arranger I often find that I often have ideas at inconvenient times - driving, some place where staff paper is not available.  This would seem to offer a quick way to record the idea and preserve that moment of inspiration for later development.

Soundation is a really cool program that allows the users to play with loops, midi files, wav files, and even creating your own music. This could be a really great way to get your students to compose their own music through technology!

This is a web-based software which is free with the option to upgrade. It is similar to GarageBand, but is great because it doesn't require a specific type of computer to use. To use, one simply drags in the loops and MIDI tracks to create their own songs. The free version has its limitations, but can still create some amazing tracks for the classroom.
