Lessons, videos, etc. for bassoon players

This site was created to assist bassoon players in learning their instruments as well as a resource for educators. A student has access to 50 different units, covering pitches and basic techniques. Like a digital method book, the creator provides audio clips to perform along with as well as videos to introduce key techniques like key flicking.

This site has some great resources for ukulele and guitar learning in the classroom. These are free. The powerpoints are especially great because it is a step by step lesson to get students to play their instruments as quickly as possible (including little excerpts of songs in a different key). The rest of the site provides "easy" versions of popular songs for students to begin playing quickly. It was given to me in a conference session about using popular music to teach ukulele and guitar.

This is an important perspective as parents begin to worry about their adolescent's academic courses (for good reason), but many are still trying to find ways to keep their kids engaged in music.

Classical Classroom is a podcast that offers a welcoming and simple approach to all things classical. It covers topics such as instrumental music, choral/opera music, film scores, composer biographies and more. The podcast is available through multiple platforms like iTunes, GooglePlay, and the web.

The Sax on the Web website contains valuable articles, transcriptions, and resources for all musicians including saxophonists.  The most popular aspect of this site is the forum.  The forum contains transcriptions, member compositions, insight on equipment, and many other discussion topics.  The forum marketplace allows users to list instruments and equipment for sale, allowing members to contact each other to purchase items.  Many college saxophone professors belong to this page and provide answers to user questions and valuable articles.  This is a great resource for all students, although the focus is on saxophone and other woodwinds.

Saxophone.org is one of the most exhaustive saxophone sites on the internet. It includes the largest online museum of saxophones, mouthpieces, and vintage instrument publications. The forum on the site is one of the largest along with SaxontheWeb, and includes a buy/sell/trade section. Saxquest owns saxophone.org and I had the pleasure of working on the saxophone museum for a number of years.

a TED talk on how music benefits the brain. This is a well known video but a worthwhile one to have easy access to!

This website is a great resource to brush up on how sound waves move and can be easily left for older students to read through. The site also offers ways to create music instruments and has discussion questions available.

This site is a rich resource for horn students. It offers information on best makes and models of instruments, fingering charts, orchestral excerpts and the history of the horn. All things horn are included on this site such as specific techniques such as transposing and stopped horn as well as embouchure formation.

This is a regular podcast that is a great resource for staying up to date with music pedagogy and instrument specific concerns. The podcasts address topics such as rehearsing beginning bands, choosing literature, classroom management and marching band.

The All-Star Orchestra, which is made up of "All-Stars" from various orchestras, produced content for Khan Academy. There is a wide-range of videos to watch from notes and rhythms, music history, conducting lessons, instrument demonstrations. This is a fantastic series with top musicians.

This website lists a large assortment of music education games that cover aural training, composers, compositions, instruments, notation, and symbols/vocabulary. "Ultimate List" is an accurate title! This looks like a compilation of several games from several websites all pulled into one. This is fantastic.

Information like this is important to know as a choir director so that you can ensure that the music you are performing isn't infringing on any laws. It also protects your school/organization from unwanted (and often hefty) fines.

Thoughtco.com/music has many articles pertaining to many different genres and styles of music. It has anything from, pop, country, and hip hop, to world music, classical, Latin, and punk. It also has a music education section that has lesson plans, articles on music history, theory, instrument care, and instruction. This would be a great resource for students to research topics in music.

The Beginning Band Boot Camp is a website that focuses on teaching beginning musicians how to put together, clean, and play the various band instruments. The purpose of the website is to have a resource available for beginning students to access to help reinforce, through the use of video, the proper technique for these various concepts. Teachers can make these videos available to their students for reference.
