Yousician is a great software resource that teaches students to play a number of instruments including: piano, guitar, bass, ukulele, and voice. The software is set-up in a creative, game-like structure that tracks student progress and ability level through playing assessments. It's a great tool to use during general music units that focus on performance practice of these different instruments. The free version is open to all for a full 20 minutes a day. Great tool for students of all ages.

Music Theory Learning to read music

This website provides information and interactive activities that focus on the study of sound. Activities include building a soundscape, exploring sound from around the world using an interactive map, and creating using a computer-generated sound mixer. The production of animal sounds and frequencies are also explored. A study of how animal sounds have influenced music and musicians is investigated.

A site with free digital resources for building online course content. Adding links to pages for students is a good first step, but making it visually stunning has been a challenge for me. These free resources allows to spice up the visual layout of course pages.

This site is something that most music educators today are familiar with; Finale. it provides a free download of Finale as well as blogs and training tutorials about how to use the program. The purpose of Finale is to all teachers (and students!) to create their own music. It can be anything from an original composition to an arrangement of a familiar song to a replica of something that has already been created. Not only does finale help build musical creativity, but it also teaches students about the basics of music notation. This site is a great source because it takes you step-by-step through downloading Finale, making it more user-friendly, especially for those that might not have as much experience with more recent music software.

All applicable to constructing curriculum, selecting repertoire for a performance ensemble or building a personal database of favorite songs. DonorsChoose is a way for any teachers to request materials for their classrooms through specified vendors. Many celebrities participate in flash funding of certain projects and Title I schools are given top billing when the projects are listed. The smaller the projects, the easier is it to get them funded. I got $6,700 funded in one project by Stephen Colbert and countless other projects funded through the generosity of others.

Music Learning Community is a site for music educators and music students that includes a great deal of information on computer-based learning. Included are games and activities that teach theory and build aural skills. There is a free trial but the site requires a membership fee.

Designed to make learning musical concepts and take-home assignments more fun and engaging, these games are broken down into various levels for students. Lower levels can be effective for early elementary students, and higher levels can be effective for students in high school. Games are colorful and entertaining, and they list certain scores that students should strive to achieve. Most games have a lesson version, a practice version, and a quiz version. Teachers can track scores and data of individual students to see strengths and weaknesses.

This website is a collection of various resources by Wendy Higdon to assist band directors in their classrooms. Her website offers a podcast about band related topics such as recruitment and inventory. Her blog includes articles on building fundamentals and stocking the right reeds for your woodwinds. Finally she has many resources available to download such as seating chart generators, recruiting materials, and self-assessments.

The Kidzone by the New York Philharmonic is an interactive website for children to use to learn primarily about instruments, composers, and famous musicians. It includes games, videos, audio recordings, and text. Students can interact with games that allow them to match rhythms, sort instruments into families, build an instrument, create a graphic-based composition, and match instruments and composers. There is also information about children's concerts.

This is an awesome resource that's student-friendly and focuses on instruments of the orchestra, as well as composers. It creates a strong connection between concept and real-world scenarios. The website is designed around the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. There are engaging and interactive games and lessons for students to learn about the orchestra and test their knowledge.

Very engaging and visually appealing website from the New York Philharmonic. Unfortunately many of the links would not work; however, one really cool feature is that there are recordings of symphony performances that can be viewed in a classroom. Much better quality of video than many available videos on YouTube.

This website provides a multitude of tools for music teachers, among other subjects. The website contains lesson plans and teaching strategies for grades K-12. There are lessons on world music, on instruments (such as building instruments), as well as the history of musical genres. The free version is limited, but the premium version is fairly inexpensive.

Resource for UF Masters of Music Education. This site is helpful in planning lessons for application of new ideas. I love that it has something to offer every teacher from grades K-12.

I use this website sometimes to help out with some of my lesson plans if I'm in need of worksheets to help back up the topic that is chosen for that particular week. This is good for any teacher because it provides a variety of different worksheets for many topics.

The Rhythm Trainer is a simple flash-based game that reinforces rhythm concepts. Students can either enter the rhythm that they hear, or choose the correct audio that matches the rhythm they see. Each example is four beats long, and there are a limited number of rhythms available. Students can select any or all of the 8 rhythms available to practice. Results can be emailed to the student's teacher.

The Rhythm trainer is another great source for helping students learn the principles of ear training. Teachers can load listening examples of varying rhythmic figures which students can respond to picking the examples they think best fit. Students can choose two modes of rhythm training which either provide them with choices for answers or require them build their answers based on the specific rhythms they are being trained on. The Rhythm Trainer does require the use Adobe Flash Player in order to play the examples but can be great for anyone teaching or learning the very basics developing good ear training skills.

This is a great tool to have to teach students rhythm. I use this to teach my private students to strengthen their ability to read rhythm. They find this website quite fun, and they enjoy all of the practices in which assign.
