TED Talks about music. Great resources for the classroom

These are TED Talks specifically about music, music technology, and the changing world of music making.

TED is a great site for any subject. It is filled with videos and articles on a wide array of topics. Topics are basically limitless.

Pandora can be used for my students to listen to songs the orchestra is presently learning or planning to learn in the future. This always comes in as an asset because of our rote style teaching method and performing from memory. If the basic melody, bass line and chord progression is familiar; it makes the music easier to learn.

A very basic interactive site for introducing composition, and specifically the treble clef staff, to students in early elementary.

This website provides lessons, exercises, and other tools pertaining to music theory. The exercises are especially useful for students to practice their music theory outside of the classroom/studio.

To teach music theory to the beginner or advanced students.  This could be used to teach beginners how to read music or advanced students to work on ear training or even identifying chords.  Very useful when teaching music theory and want to reinforce skills.

This is an educational website, but you don't have to be in a school or university to use it. It takes as its model Kutiman's brilliant thru-you.com site, where he made seven new songs by remixing bits of video shared on YouTube. Included here for free are video tutorials which will show you how to create a basic remix just with the software that comes free on a Mac, or is available free on the internet. Windows users may be able to get the same results with Acid by Sony.

This resource serves as a simple list that can be used for choral teachers of different ability levels to get a basic handle on teaching middle school chorus. This website contains a free download of a very basic version of the Notation software, Finale.

Wakelet is a great resource to use when creating a very basic website. Each collection serves as a page and follows the format of a newsfeed. Students are able to access the material at home and can practice what was done in class. This source can deal with whatever musical content you choose to post.

Morton Subotnick's Creating Music has a variety of music games and activities that would be suited for an elementary curriculum. I would like to use this website as a center in my classroom, to allow students to explore simple music creation and music listening.

Creating music is a site preferably for younger learners. It provides practice on pitches, timbres, ear training, and memorization.

Younger musicians can use this website to understand pitch, hearing music and create basic compositions. There is an iPad application that goes along with it and it is completely free and a great educational tool for younger children.

This site has many lessons to help students better understand how to play saxophone. This site would be good for students who begin playing saxophone late and don't have the chance for the one on one instruction.

Additionally, there are exercises to practice ear training, as well as written theory. Finally, the website has a reference section that has a glossary of music terms and accompanying definitions.

This website is much like musictheory.net, as it offers tutorials, references, and articles to supplement teaching. It also offers exercises, where students can practice what they learn and can be assessed using these tools.

Educators can also make use of different ear training exercises that are available as well as various music related articles.

This site is stocked full of useful features for students in the form of games, quizzes, and a great flash keyboard with music to match. Using the number keys, students can practice even if they don't have a piano keyboard. There are also lessons and resources for teachers, too.

This website is suitable for teachers who give students free time to work on music games. Many different music topics are taught by the music teachers and a better way for students to retain the information would include turning some of their assignments into competition. One thing i have learned, elementary students love to be competitive, so if the students are able to get high scores on music games, then they are retaining and getting the information.
