If I Was Poor (A Letter Written by a Billionaire) « The Activists - 0 views

  • If I was poor I would steal bread, I would steal food, I would steal my life back from those who thrive from crushing the lives of others. If I was poor, I would not lie submissively waiting for the billionaires to become humane, I would seize the means of production. If I was poor, I would form a gang of poor people and take control of the streets. If I was poor, I would spend every ounce of energy showing other poor people how to rise above their inner and outer poverty. Unfortunately for you poor scum, it is I, that writes the laws. Unfortunately for you starving children, it is the club of billionaires that change and modify the laws to suit their needs.
  •
There was a protest in my city, I called the idiotic mayor and told him to put curfew rules into places, the law is my friend. The law is your enemy, the law is the enemy of those with no power. The law is a reflection of the appetites and needs of the powerful. I am the law, you are the slave of the law. I am the lawyers, you are the ones arrested and brutalized because of your skin shades. I am the law, you are the poor citizens who cannot even afford a lawyer.

80+ Google Forms for the Classroom | edte.ch - 0 views

  •
Google Forms is a great tool and I hope to use it more throughout this year. Take a look here for a more detailed introduction and guide to using and creating a Google Form - this was written prior to Google bringing forms into the NEW menu. I have created example forms for each of the different topics, follow the links in each of the ten sections. With help from a Googler I have included a link so that you can get your own copy of the form - click on the appropriate link and it should open in your docs home.

Main - Opinion - Erna Mahyuni - The language that divides us @ Wed Nov 16 2011 - 0 views

  •
Teaching science and maths in English was a bad idea from the start. Let's be honest here; - half our teaching force, especially in the rural areas, can barely speak English, much less teach in it. If poor English standards don't matter, then why do our politicians send their children abroad for studies? There is a simple fix to our horrible public education system: Force all members of parliament and state assembly representatives to send their children to public schools and universities. Make it a condition of office - if a politician is elected, then his or her children must be enrolled locally or face a punitive fine for each year spent abroad. Right now the politicians in power don't care because they don't have to worry about their children's future. Malaysian parents have to worry not just about the rising cost of education but slipping standards.

An Ecological Approach to Life: Urie Bronfenbrenner - 0 views

  • We often don't think about people in a historical context: we should. It is from within our contexts that our selves develop.
  • Dr. Bronfenbrenner developed an Ecological Systems theory to human development. It was revolutionary at the time--and in many ways still is. He wrote about about development as something occurring within five systems
  • Micro system: This is the setting in which I live. My family, peers, school, and neighborhood all populate this system. It is within the micro system that I spend most of my life and have most of my direct interactions. It's important to know that within this theory, I am not a passive recipient of experiences in these settings. I actively am involved in creating and deciding the contours of these experiences.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Mesosystem: Refers to relations between microsystems or connections between contexts. This is the in between system. An example is the relation of family experiences to school experiences. If I don't feel safe at home for example, or my humans don't provide me with positive interactions, I'm not likely going to be successful in school. I won't have the skills from home to use and be skillful in school.
  • Exosystem involves the links between a social setting that I don't have an active role in and my immediate context. For example, I'm not directly involved in my human's marathon running. I'm influenced by it because when he's deep into training, I'm left alone more often and go on less walks. The exosystem, in this case marathon training, changes patterns of interaction with me. Involves links between a social setting in which the individual does not have an active role and the individual's immediate context.
  • Macrosystem: Describes the culture in which I live. Cultural contexts include developing and industrialized countries, socioeconomic status, poverty, and ethnicity.
  • Chronosystem: The final system involves the effect of time and transitions across a lifespan. Marriage, divorce, or the birth of a baby all are transitions in the human world that fall into the chronosystem.
  •
"In the United States, it is now possible for a person eighteen years of age, female as well as male, to graduate from high school, college, or university without ever having cared for, or even held, a baby; without ever having comforted or assisted another human being who really needed help... No society can long sustain itself unless its members have learned the sensitivities, motivations, and skills involved in assisting and caring for other human beings." - U. Bronfenbrenner

The Invitation by Oriah - 0 views

  •
The Invitation by Oriah It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing. It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love for your dream for the adventure of being alive. It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon… I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain. I want to know if you can sit with pain mine or your own without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it. I want to know if you can be with joy mine or your own if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful to be realistic to remember the limitations of being human. It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself. If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy. I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty every day. And if you can source your own life from its presence.I want to know if you can live with failure yours and mine and still stand at the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "Yes." It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done to feed the children. It doesn't interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back.It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to

The twenty-somethings are here; get out of the way | Creativity_Unbound - 0 views

  • “So, how do you manage to stay fresh in this business after all these years?” he wanted to know. “I get out of the way,” was the honest answer, explaining that the wisest thing anyone my age could do was to hire smart young people, load them up with responsibility, point them in the right direction and hover in the background until someone needs you.
  • He, too, was stunned, assuming that no one would do that out of a need for control, or a fear of becoming irrelevant, or a concern that everyone else would get the credit.
  • I find that the smartest, most inspiring people I work with tend to be the youngest. They move seamlessly from one medium to another. They have the courage to try new things.  They’re so familiar with technology and its potential that nothing seems impossible.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Want to stay young, relevant, and deserved of some control?  Want to attract the kind of talent you actually need to prosper long term? Focus on the bigger stuff: culture, vision, standards, organization and casting. Then let go and out of the way.

Elizabeth Haynes: LARP (Live-Action Roleplay) - 0 views

  •
Last night I was out to prove that an innocent man had been framed for murder, and the most powerful judge in town was a corrupt jerk with no concern for justice. With the help of said innocent man (freed from imprisonment early due to release papers which I may have forged...slightly) and the proprieter of a sweet shop who also peddled opium, I gathered evidence of this heinous fraud and presented it to a rather harassed policewoman, and together we confronted the judge at his own daughter's debutante ball and had him hauled away. Of course, his daughter soon learned that she might not be his daughter after all, because the mother she never knew was the wife of the wrongfully imprisoned man, stolen from him then cast aside! In the end, justice was done... and my career prospects in the legal profession were looking rather rosier. LARPing - a highly underrated experience! LARP = Live Action Role-Play, you get given a character in a story and turn up on the night in costume and ready to be that character. You have goals for the night and a few people your character should know, everyone else has goals too, and everyone tries to get what their character wants as secrets are uncovered - 40 people or so in the ones I've been in. This one was based on Sweeny Todd and similar Victorian gothic stuff.

Azam: About writing - 0 views

  •
Aku rasa budak2 MRSM ni tulis cerita tak best bukan pasal depa kurang tengok dunia ke apa (the Internet took care of that) tapi pasai depa kurang guna pancaindera. Semua benda diproses pakai otak. Mata nampak tapi tak melihat. Hidung bau tapi tak menghidu. Jari sentuh tapi tak merasa. Maka jadilah cerita fiksyen bunyi macam karangan fakta.
