On Orbitz, Mac Users Steered to Pricier Hotels - WSJ.com - 0 views
-
Orbitz found Mac users on average spend $20 to $30 more a night on hotels than their PC counterparts, a significant margin given the site's average nightly hotel booking is around $100, chief scientist Wai Gen Yee said. Mac users are 40% more likely to book a four- or five-star hotel than PC users, Mr. Yee said, and when Mac and PC users book the same hotel, Mac users tend to stay in more expensive rooms. "We had the intuition, and we were able to confirm it based on the data," Orbitz Chief Technology Officer Roger Liew said. The sort of targeting undertaken by Orbitz is likely to become more commonplace as online retailers scramble to identify new ways in which people's browsing data can be used to boost online sales. Orbitz lost $37 million in 2011 and its stock has fallen by more than 74% since its 2007 IPO.

In this case, that personal assistant technology is being applied to a specific industry — banking. (Banking was, incidentally, one of the industries called out by Siri co-founder and former CEO Dag Kittlaus when he wrote a column for TechCrunch about the future potential of the virtual personal assistant.) BBVA Chief Innovation Officer Beatriz Lara Bartolomé says Lola is named after a real BBVA sales agent in Madrid, Spain. Her numbers were orders of magnitude better than anyone else’s, and when BBVA researchers interviewed her about the secrets of her success, they were most impressed by her passion and enthusiasm for the customers.

"The stats from Crowdtap show that users trust their friends (73 percent) more than movie critics (27 percent) such as Gene Siskel or Roger Ebert. People are also four times more likely to like a movie's Facebook page than to follow its Twitter account. More movie-goers also turn to Facebook to give their first review, rather than texting or calling friends after the movie."

"Snap. Verizon offers iPhone 4. Forget the slight redesign, forget the lack of multitasking between data and voice, forget the pricing models for unlimited, tethering, and video chat over 3G. Now the store brand is competing directly with the actual iPhone. Naturally the pent-up demand by Verizon contractees will blow out the overall numbers. But much more importantly, Apple is free to ship an iPhone 5 across the board, where existing contractees can be marketed to with bundled services, i.e. the new TV, the new Enterprise, the new Office. One device, with the carriers battling for the most attractive rendering of services."

Virtual Tour app takes the idea behind those shitty 360-degree tours that apartments and hotels do, and makes it much better with more granular control over what you see, plus interesting information embedded inside. Done for homes, towns, cars, stores, whatever.

I just installed this on my iPad. When we are all back in the office (I'm still working from home), I will show it to you, since it a nice update to this kind of Quicktime VR experience.
