  •
Computer-based teaching (CBT) is a well-known educational device, but it has never been applied systematically to the teaching of a complex, rare, genetic disease, such as Hunter disease (MPS II). Aim: To develop interactive teaching software functioning as a virtual clinic for the management of MPS II.

Exquisite Bodies - 0 views

  •
In the 19th century, despite the best efforts of body snatchers, the demand from medical schools for fresh cadavers far outstripped the supply. One solution to this gruesome problem came in the form of lifelike wax models. These models often took the form of alluring female figures that could be stripped and split into different sections. Other models were more macabre, showing the body ravaged by 'social diseases' such as venereal disease, tuberculosis and alcohol and drug addiction.

"Diagnosis-Independent Alzheimer Disease Biomarker Signature in Cognitively Normal Elderly People"
  •
I heard Trojanowski (the senior author) talk about this last month at the annual meeting of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. It's a very interesting topic with a lot of social ramifications. The statement in the absrract that among people with mild cognitive impairment, the biomarker profile had a 100% sensitivity for development of AD needs to be carefully considered. First, the metric that is of greater interest is the positive predictive value. Second, it is known that some patients who have the classic AD findings at autopsy did not have mental impairment in life. We know this from the Nun study.

Microbiology Flashcards app for USMLE uses gamification for board prep - 0 views

  •
"The app provides mini flashcards for over 130 bugs including high yield keywords and disease associations. Quizzes include vignettes that have more information about each organism, but this app still does not include all the relevant board exam related microbiology information. This app cannot be used as the only microbiology resource when studying for boards, but the app may be useful to quickly study on the go."

The hidden curriculum in medical school - 0 views

  •
"They want you to study by yourself and become obsessed with how well you understanding the material. ergo - stop caring about whether anyone else understands it. It would be a great system to develop overconfident get-mine solo practice doctors, but everyone knows there's too much paperwork to run a solo practice these days. We're also coming upon the age of specialists when collaboration will be at a premium. A disease like diabetes is complex. You might need primary care physicians working with vascular surgeons, endocrinologists, ophthalmologists, I could list every specialty. Not to mention nutritionists, personal trainers, policy makers."
