On Starfall.com, there is an entire phonics section titled "Learn to Read" that begins with focus on beginning sounds, making words and word families and gradually gets harder as you progress through. It is an interactive making words game where students that are playing can hear a word, see a matching picture, select a letter that begins the word, hear the sound that the selected letter makes and hear the completed word - all in the context of word families. The game is also self correcting - there is a buzzer noise if you select the wrong beginning sound/letter, so students know to choose again. Within the "Learn to Read" section, there are also books that use the words from the making words activities and videos for students to watch. This would be a great tool to use for a student to independently practice phonics at a literacy center when they can't be working with the teacher because it is visual, it reads to the student, it is easy to use and follow, and it is self-correcting so that students are practicing correctly.

This article presents the idea that using screencasts and/or video lessons can help give students access to better instruction. The main idea of the paper is that to properly support students, one needs to be able to help answer questions in a timely fashion. As students study away from school, they tend to email questions to their instructors. I have noticed in recent years that emailed questions, although extremely relevant, can be unwieldy to explain via text. The article's text has the exact same conclusion (which is why it resonated with me the way it did) and makes the distinction that those same unwieldy or impractical 'text' solutions would be trivially answered if the student was face-to-face with the instructor. This concept, that face-to-face interaction is superior to all others, is the motivation for writing this paper. While screencasts and videos are not very interactive (for the most part), they are superior to simple written explanations (especially for complex or visual problems in science and math).

Abstract: This reflective essay describes a teacher's development of a student-centered approach to teaching which bridges the gap between students' knowledge before and after a course. All of the activities are well organized under different categories relating to the five core components of reading: Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. All of the resources also provide teachers with detailed instructions on how to play each of the games.

In this report, technology is one major factor in helping end the achievement gap. Students who use technology and the Internet see greater learning gains and outcomes. Students are more exposed to a variety of resources when using technology. Through the use of technology, learning gaps will decrease due to engagement, differentiation, and motivation.

This article is great at recognizing necessary checks and balances for teachers. Changing standards will not along close all of the achievement gaps. The improved curriculum must come with a way for teachers to know they are delivering appropriately and sufficiently.

This article, by the Access Center, discusses how to implement differentiation effectively in the classroom. The method put forward states that one must access student readiness, determine student interest and identify learning styles to successfully differentiation. Multiple strategies are also presented for implementation in a math classroom setting.

The Content Literacy Continuum (CLC) provides five levels of support for teaching reading and writing in the secondary content areas. Created by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning, the continuum enhances and embeds strategies in the classroom, and provides intensive training with support personnel for students reading below grade level.

Remember the 65% solution? This article is from 2006, but the discussion about demonstrating student learning in the school library is still relevant. This is an excellent design for a student-centered inquiry activity. I'd like to revise my introduction to circuits next year to work more like this.

This is a portion of a website called Reading A-Z which focuses on various strategies used to teach students to ID letters and their corresponding sounds. Some of the segments of information include: the alphabet song, alphabet books (these are available through Reading A-Z if you have a membership), teaching sounds, writing letters and alphabet activities. Many of these activities are multi-sensory and interactive, engaging ways to teach the alphabet and sounds to young children. They would make good whole group, small group or literacy center activities in the classroom.
