Math 216: Statistics for Engineering

Rather a dull read - A lot of more interesting articles that use statistics really dilute them before putting them in the actual body of the text (i.e. everything in Popular Science).

This was rather interesting because, although there is sampling bias, it doesn't really matter. The sample space is android devices that visit the android market. Here, the sampling bias means only devices that would use the android market are polled--which overlaps very well with the developer's target audience of people who might download their app.

Moore's law describes a long-term trend in the history of computing hardware whereby the number of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years.

They use probabilities combined with edge detection algorithms to match images, paintings, and drawings to others

The dataset itself is available at the bottom of the page - "Download the data." This page is a competition among data analysts/mathematicians to produce the most accurate predictive model, based on historical hospital admittance data, for finding people likely to enter a hospital in the next year - Giving preventative medicine a leg up by statistically determining the at-risk patients and decreasing the cost of care. Super cool!

I like the energy consumption statistics (the engineering connection) but the whole thing is really cool
