MaRS announced the creation of JOLT, a new technology accelerator dedicated to building high-growth web and mobile companies that promise to transform the way consumers and enterprises connect, work and play. JOLT will select up to 15 high-potential startups annually, providing them with space, seed financing and mentorship, as well as access to partners and some of the top angel and venture capital investors in the industry. The goal of the program is to accelerate market validation and, in turn, help these companies secure the capital and talent necessary to scale efficiently.

The Graham Boeckh Foundation which focuses on improving the lives of those that suffer from mental illness has appointed James D. Hughes as President. The Graham Boeckh Foundation had a symposium on the "Next Frontier in Mental Health": From Research to Patients" that was held at the MaRS Centre on April 24.

Why Should I Care event took place on April 16th. Dr. Ilse Treurnicht, CEO of MaRS Discovery District discussed how the development of Phase 2 will help to build tomorrow's knowledge-based economy.

Over 70 companies, entrepreneurs and financiers have signed on to provide advice, services and/or investment to the program, including Polar Mobile, Google, Zynga, CFC Media Lab, The Working Group, Media Profile, PostMedia Network Inc., Global Accelerator Network, and the Jet Cooper Web design agency in Toronto.

Ilse Treurnicht, CEO of MaRS Discovery District was one of the speakers at the THINK Conference. "The Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario's Minister of Economic Development and Innovation, presented the ORION Leadership awards on April 16th to high school student Marshall Zhang, John Helliker of Sheridan College and University of Toronto professor Dr. Shana Kelley." 

2012 Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada (SBCC) is a national biotechnology research competition that inspires students to pursue a career in biotechnology. The event took place at the MaRS Centre on April 19th.

"The Graham Boeckh Foundation will be hosting its' first symposium, The Next Frontier in Mental Health: From Research to Patients, to discuss and provide insights on the translation of research into improved patient care and how we can move forward towards greatly improving community mental health practice in this country." The event will be held at the MaRS Centre on April 24, 2012.

Intertainment Media Inc. announced 20% ownership investment in Tunezy, Inc.Tunezy, Inc is a MaRS client who has received over $30,000 worth of advisory services from MaRS.

The ORION Leadership Awards will be presented on April 16th, 2012. The award recognizes innovation leadership in Ontario's e‐Infrastructure, Higher Education, and the K‐12 sectors. In addition ORION will be announcing the THINK conference. Ilse Treurnicht, CEO of MaRS Discovery District will be speaking at the THINK conference.

Ontario Public Service is interested in looking at the state of innovation in public sector organizations.Some of the leaders who have in public sector innovation are: Social Innovation Generation (SiG), a collaborative partnership between The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, the University of Waterloo, the MaRS Discovery District, and the PLAN Institute.

Anthony Wong and Paul Bottero from inMotive, a MaRS Cleantech Client,  share their story of how their innovation and business came about.

According to Katherine Scarrow, Globe and Mail reporter, "small business sentiment is up, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business's latest business barometer index." MaRS Discovery District is hosting a Business of Aging summit on April 30th at the MaRS Centre to discuss practical strategies to improve health and productivity for aging employees and those caring for aging parents.
