Skymeter Corp., an upstart technology firm that has developed smart meter devices that use global positioning system technology to pinpoint the exact location of vehicles.the Skymeter technology is available only in Winnipeg, where the municipality's parking authority is testing it. The new system is expected to be implemented citywide by the fall of 2010, making it the first jurisdiction in the world to use the park-and-walk-away Skymeter. Nov 18, 2009

According to an Angus Reid public opinion poll, Calgary is reported to have the best quality of life out of Canada's four largest cities. Acording to Jane Switzer, a report from The Globe and Mail, the "Angus Reid poll was commissioned for CityAge Media's The Innovation City summit." The summit will take place at the MaRS Centre, July 18 and 19th and will explore the new ideas, technologies and partnerships that will build the 21st century city, and why - and how - Metro Toronto and Canada will be a leader in this urban century.

Five architectural teams face the challenge of reinventing a site considered to be Toronto's birthplace. Adamson Associates Architects is on the short listed firms. Mention of Adamson being responsible for the restoration and renovation of the MaRS Centre at College and University. The project included the reformation of the College Wing of the historic Toronto General Hospital and stitching that into contemporary buildings and public atrium space.

Toronto's Baycrest centre is staking a claim to a piece of the booming brain fitness market with a new company, Cogniciti, and a new generation of brain games aimed at helping baby boomers keep their minds sharp and boost their productivity in the workplace well into old age. Alvaro Fernandez, a researcher on aging, says the new games are designed to keep older brains nimble. Hon. Milloy states "The McGuinty government is proud to support the work that both MaRS and Baycrest are doing to improve quality of life and tackle the challenges of an aging population. Ontario is supporting innovators across the province to ensure this kind of success is the rule, not the exception." Dec 2, 2009

Several in the tech industry, including MaRS advisor Lance Laking, have gotten together to produce this book, "The Entrepreneurial Effect" with the foreword by Terry Matthews. It is a collection of practical lessons learned. The book is meant to be a knowledge source for those decisions we face as we start and grow our companies, for example, the real story behind risk and investment, how to pick resellers or strategic partners, selling in China, and the only reasons to consider M&As. It is also worth noting that all the authors have donated their knowledge. All proceeds of the book will go to support student technology entrepreneurship - via University of Ottawa grants and scholarships.

Mention of the Let's Talk Science All Science Challenge is taking place at the MaRS Centre, May 19. All Science Challenge - a science quiz competition for Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from over 15 schools in the greater Toronto area. Designed by students for students, it's a fun-filled day of competition and camaraderie that's part of a nationwide program to excite and inspire the next generation of scientists.
