This article compares some of the plugins. It settled on one that looks more promising than the last one. We are currently working on a project that requires us to build a business directory in WordPress. There are many ways to build a directory in WordPress including custom development, existing free or paid plugins, and a ready-made directory theme. We explored several options before finally deciding which one fit our project needs best.

Haven't looked at this indepth--would this work for directory?

This prototype WordPress website features a community and members are added somehow--I wonder if this page updates automatically as members join or if more management is required. Also wonder if the same tool would work for the learning directory (with a different profile to be completed)?

Did you notice how many members joined today (sunday)? If we could get that many member each day, I think we would be in heaven. I also like their focus on member profiles and member information. Good thing to remember.

Article by Kerry Hannon, Forbes, 1.25.13 This author asserts that older workers will become more valued by employers even though they aren't making special efforts to hire or retain them now and do not want to pay for the cost of training/retraining them. These trends suggest that taking charge of one's own learning with a PLP, PLN, etc. and taking advantage of all the free opportunities will be valuable skills to have. This author only looks to community colleges for retraining and does not reference any of the online options that we know about from the work on the directory. Should we draft a comment back to Kerry Hannon on this website? "1. Who is going to pay for that training? Most labor market experts I have interviewed say the government and private employers need to ramp up more training programs for older workers and create workplaces that make it easier for them to do their jobs. Employers don't want to spend for it. They've already cut to the bone to stay competitive globally in recent years and this kind of spending is a tough sell. Conceivably, as I discussed as a panel member at a recent Federal Reserve Workforce Development conference, one way to provide the needed training is through the community college system. Info to consider for people who post on the directory

We definitely want to include this in our directory. Stanford just appointed and administrator who deals exclusively with online learning. Over 3,000 Stanford audio and video programs are available on Apple's popular iTunes platform, including course lectures, faculty presentations and campus events. The iTunes U app provides access to additional course content from several Stanford courses.

Look at this page of online learning communities for different gatherings of educators--the numbers of members, who's running them, where they are located, etc. It's a virtual constellation of learning networks/communities. Could WLS directory look like this someday?

Matthew Brimer helped found General Assembly which has a wide range of practical learning opportunities on-campus in NYC and online. Ranges from 8-12 week "immersives", courses, to one hour classes, etc. Doris will list in the WLC learning directory.

RedHoop has an aggregation of over 7,000 (free, free trial, paid) online courses. Put in the topic you wish to learn about, and it sorts through the database to find them. I found 11 in 2 seconds on infographics. Like their tag line: search, learn, grow. Maybe we should just have RedHoop as a one-stop directory?

This page on learning from Life Reimagined is basically a handoff to organizations such as Coursera, iTunesU, Skillshare, and Unstuck app for people to learn online without tools they need to succeed. It is the least well developed of the Life Reimagined pages IMO.

Organizations Directory 7 Billion Actions is a call to action for corporations and NGOs. All around the globe, organizations have answered this call by mobilizing their employees and partners to get involved. Organizations of all kinds, in every part of the world, are creating innovative programs that address issues associated with a world of 7 billion.

I like the array of logos they used to announce the organizations . . . wonder how they decided who went where . . . on the first screen, I immediately saw two orgs I have been affiliated with, and wondered if there might be more but didn't see any I had personal experience with. Were they linked to their sites? I didn't check. Also, for courses, I wonder if we need tags and more of a profile other than a logo and name for folks to find what they need fast.
