How crowdsourcing is impacting scientific research, and how blogging about scientific findings is changing how information about new discoveries gets supported/debunked. Interesting in the social media crowdsourcing aspect of how information is not in the hands of just experts anymore.

I was looking for a tool that allowed the "crowd" to create a database, which I think is ultimately what we would want. None of the ten listed seemed to fit that description. Did either of you see one that we may want to consider, or do we try to find something else? Does one of these seem like a good fit for us in other ways?

I haven't determined that any of these is the preferred channel for doing the W.W. database, Lyn. But the idea of incentivizing the creation and maintenance of a crowdsourced 'database' (for lack of a better term) is offered by these groups. A wiki that is set up for a Learning W.W. could be the beginning app until we find someone to do it or a tool to do it better. Even using Diigo in a paid account could work to gather tagged contributions with better organization to follow when we enlist someone to help us.

Interesting article by Jessica Leigh Hester, July 7, 2015 on CityLab that shows impact of "social influence bias" in crowdsourced opinions--good case for crap detection. Don't know how to get around it except look at other review sites, business's website, etc.

blog post by Samantha Whitehorne, April 1, 2014, on crowdsourcing convention/conference agenda development to members. Interesting concept in several ways, not least of which is the tool they used to keep track of submission of ideas in real time and votes. Led to greater member engagement, no word yet on quality of conference agenda.

A community of adjuncts for adjunct teaching at colleges that uses crowdsourcing to collect data for the field, research issues, and get and give advice. Something like this could be adapted to provide value for other part-time workers be they professional or not, such as baby boomers shifting into retirement (what would such a site or community be called?), contractors, etc.

Yes, it is the general idea and the quality of learning may or may not be there . . . what are their potential topics? Why would anyone send $100 before understanding what the options are for learning with others? Perhaps he has established credibility elsewhere that would warrant others to sign up.

Very interesting how they set it up, could be role model for us someday. I went through "Social Work, Gerontology" tabs but they were not populated with info. Did see one very nice SW-Gerontology professor whom I met years ago at Washington University in St. Louis

TED talk that goes with his book, Cognitive Surplus. Very good talk about how we can now use internet and smartphones to really impact not only local but global political structures and systems, as well as get information out in real time that benefits everyone.

I missed this long tail blog post by Jarche last summer (July 2014). It is sobering.
