    This excerpt is taken from the book "The Gamification of Learning and Instruction: Game-based Methods and Strategies for Training and Education" Game-based learning have been increasingly used in educational settings in the last 10 years and there is a lot of research on this subject. I wonder if there is any on game-based learning how experts and novices solve certain problems in the game environments. Sounds a promising research area.

    The example of Making sale in differentiating novices and experts is stunning.While novices focus on making the sale , experts develop relationships. The former aims to think, organize information for a limited time for that thing only.However the latter thinks more elaboratelly, develop ways for a long period of time for future connections which is wiser.Thus, we can see that experts know how to use their long term memory effectively compared to novices.

    "EXPERT" is a very powerful word. It gives many responsibilities to the people who are considered "experts" in their fields. As the writer says, "It is hard to let others know that you don't know everything they think you know." What professional and social pressure on people! I don't know how to get rid of such feelings but I think people should be aware of the fact that being a leader and at the same time an expert necessiates at least 20,000 hours of deliberate practice :-))

    This is a book by Geoff Colvin which talks about the importance of deliberate practice. Mr. Colvin's primary message in this book is that people are not born with all the natural talent and abilities that will make them great it life. He asserts that, aside from some physical atributes that may give an athlete an advantage in a particular sport, everyone can achieve world-class performance through "deliberate practice" in his or her chosen field - business, music, sports, etc.

    Thank you for the link, I am curious in finding more sources on the effect of deliberate practice and its effects. As I have searched Geoff Colvin is from the field of economics so it can be interesting to hear from people of different fields.

That nature is orderly rather than capricious is an example. Certain statements are also theories simply to the extent that they are not yet facts.     Pınar, I think Carnegie Learning "Success Stories" page does not provide the information whether the research group uses the tutoring system as additional or supportive on top of the control group's traditional lesson content. So if the research group only used the tutoring system then it is a significant result.

    I think it was a supportive program because in the report it was stated that the Cognitive Tutor Algebra I curriculum consisted of classroom instruction, software sessions, and text. However, the information provided in the report is not sufficient to make an evaluation of the program, other variables might have influenced the results.

    In this study, resarchers has created a virtual learning enviroment by considering situated learning theory. The results explained that VR features and perceived usefulness variables were predictors for situated learning. Moreover,the results are found to be statistically significant and indicate that situated learning helps to improve the motivation to learn.

    This is the article which defines critical characteristics of situated learning enviroment. The authors used a lot of literature in the analysis part of the study. The purpose of this study was firstly, to identify critical characteristics of a situated learning environment from the extensive literature base on the subject; secondly, to operationalise the critical characteristics of a situated learning environment by designing a multimedia program which incorporated the identified characteristics; and thirdly, to investigate students' perceptions of their experiences using an multimedia package based on a situated learning framework. I think it will helpful us while we are searching for more articles on situated learning, because it has an extensive reference list.

    I remember many years ago I read a science fiction book about a game which was created to select the President. (Spoiler - The winner of the game was a 13 old year boy:)) Actually games are very interesting and will be very useful for education but the main problem here is the nature of market and the cost. Last week I was reading an article about mobile learning, I think this quote is meaningful for games too "In any case, hardware devices and technical systems are all without exception designed, manufactured, and marketed for corporate, retail, or recreational users. Any educational uses of the devices and the systems are necessarily parasitic and secondary." We have to consider education as "building the nation, building our future" then we can afford the cost and then educational games, devices will not be secondary...

    Yelda, honestly, I also used to question the contribution of video games to learning and nowadays, as seeing more examples like the one you shared, I guess yes perspective are changing:) I believe as we also discussed in the forum, the most critical thing is how the material, video or something else is presented to the learners and used, not the material itself.

    The same material in two differnt hands may serve to two differnt ideologies , beliefs, subject areas hence I do definitely agree with Canan the mentality of the minds who are using those plays the important role.
