An App To Let You Take Control Of Your Health Care Data | Co.Exist: World changing idea... - 1 views

  •
"Instead of waiting for doctor visits, Aetna's new CarePass app will correlate all your health data to try to give you a picture of your health and what you can do to make it better." Much technological disruption to the health care industry has come from startups with an outside perspective: for example, ZocDoc, which has transformed the way people find new doctors; InQuicker, which lets people reserve a spot in line at an emergency room; Mango, which gamifies the routine chore of taking daily meds, and countless other new startups and apps that we've profiled (and tens of thousands more that we haven't). However, a new tech initiative at Aetna is an example of innovation and disruption from within. The company recently announced its plans to offer a health care app called CarePass which would help its customers monitor their own health care data.

Apple Said To Be Focusing On Health With iOS 8 And iWatch, Following Exec Meeting With ... - 2 views

  •
"The health monitoring app called "Healthbook" will come pre-installed on iOS 8, which, if true, would be a huge blow to third-party apps including those made by Fitbit, Nike, Runkeeper and Withings just to name a few. It would track and report steps, calories burned, distance walked and more, including weight fluctuations, and blood pressure, hydration levels, heart rate and more. Apple's focus on health in iOS 8 is given credence by a number of new reports from this week, including the news from the New York Times earlier today that Apple execs met with the FDA late last year to discuss mobile medical applications. Apple also reportedly hired Michael O'Reilly, M.D. away from a position as Chief Medical Officer of Masimo Corporation in July 2013. O'Reilly is an expert in pulse oximetry among other things, which is used to non-invasively take key vitals from a user via optical sensors."

April 5, 2012 at 10:45 AM ET Thanks to the ruckus surrounding "Girls Around Me," we now know how easy it is for apps and other services to repackage our personal data for disturbingly creepy ends. The Girls Around Me might be the latest report to blow up in a big way over this issue, but it certainly hasn't been the first.

Ex-Apple Engineer Launches Moov, The Next Generation Of Wearable Fitness Tracking | Tec... - 3 views

"The band uses a combination of hardware (9-axis sensors) and software algorithms to pinpoint your body's exact movements in space without the help of a camera, letting the device give you tips on how to run without putting strain on your knees, or how to lift weights with the proper form. It's pretty clever. When you're running, the Moov will give real-time audio tips right through your headphones about how to shorten or lengthen your stride or speed up. And even better, the app can run while your music plays, only interrupting to hit you with a helpful tip."
