This gives a vague overview for people who want to learn some intresting facts about this amazing women from Kentucky and the things she was able to accomplish during her time as a senator for 21 years in Kentucky.

This is the interview of Mrs. Powers and is extremely beneficial to our study of her. I think she was one of the most influential women of all time. She was able to influence and change so many lives in Kentucky and through out the south.

This is another example of a women that was able to achieve equality with the men in her town based on her economic status. She should also be known for acquiring and holding on to her businesses herself.

I found it extremely intresting that a Kentucky women born before women had the right to vote could make such a huge impact not only on a state level or a nation wide level, but on an international level, like Lena Phillips was able to accomplish in her lifetime.

Sociological study of the history and impact of the ideas of participatory democracy - emphasizing the strategic components of this leadership approach: builds trust among members, leads to better and more innovative decisions, develops leaders among those whose perspectives have been systematically devalued, effects change without reproducing the very socio-political structures that it fights. The strategies for participatory decision-making comes out of the 1930s legacy of the great American educator, John Dewey - both Ella Baker and Miles Horton were trained at Brookwood Labor College in Katonah, New York. Established leaders are often uncomfortable with real, democratic decisionmaking since it fundamentally challenges implicit hierarchies.

Wonderful description of the importance of the Highlander trainings and Septima Clark's emphasis on involving the people for whom the fight for social justice most affected (not just influencing those around them or persuading others on their behalf). The NAACP's Crusade for Citizenship in the late 1950s with the organizational skills of Ella Baker showed this kind of work could be done in the deep South, but needed more cross-organizational support infrastructures to stave off the violent reactions of segregationists. The greatest impact would have to happen at the local grassroots levels -. and this meant empowerment of local leaders.

I really liked what the University of Louisville was doing to try to impower the lives of the women students and the women living in Jefferson County. The goal of the Women's Center is to promote equality between men and women, increase the self reliance of women and to display and demonstrate everything that women do for society. The goal is to change the mindset of both men and women who are living in a different era and to show that women are capable of accomplishing anything that a man is capable of accomplishing.

This forum is set up by the law school atthe University of Louisville and focuses much of its time on discussing issues such as gay marriage, affirmative action, disability rights, domestic violence, racial profiling, and other topics. Since 1992 when created the forum has expanded and is really making an impact at the University by focusing on diversity among the students and faculty in the Brandeis Law School at the University of Louisville.

How might we encourage our readers to go in to an archives and see the primary sources themselves instead of hoping everything they want is digitized and available online? Think how much of women's history is going unnoticed and becomes forgotten in genealr narratives about our history...

This website gives information on one of the churches in my group project. The church was built for the black catholics in Lexington due to segregation in the two other catholic churches. The website offers the history of the church, which also had a school, even though most of the students were not catholic. Despite the racial segregation between the catholic churches in Lexington, St. Peter Claver did not recieve a black preist until the year 2000.
