  • "Joining" church, then, was much like joining a civic club or fraternity.
  • The Benevolent Empire A complete structure of church and parachurch organizations made up what came to be called the Benevolent Empire. The Benevolent was merely an interlocking series of missionary and supporting organizations devoted to Christianizing America and the world. The Benevolent Empire grew out of early American revivalism. Revivalism stimulated church growth, particularly in America's mainline denominations and with this growth came two important concepts which in turn emphasized outreach.
  • Early American parachurch organizations had much in common. All of them are openly Christian. All of them are voluntary. Many had no ties to any single religious group; most were inter-denominational demonstrating that in spite of practical and theological differences, cooperation took place. It is significant, however, that laymen rather than the clergy directed most of these societies or organizations.

  • The Benevolent Empire, fueled by "disinterested benevolence" and perfectionism, also pushed for various national and social reforms.
  • Other social reform efforts also began during this time. Dorothea Dix worked for reform in the care of the insane. Christians promoted penal reform in the 1830s. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony pushed for women's rights. Horace Mann and others crusaded for free public education between 1820 and 1840. Mann belonged to the Christian Connection, a descendant of the New England Christians. A number of different reform efforts directed their attention to the "peculiar institution," American slavery.
  • The Benevolent Empire and all its inter-relationships illustrated the power of Christianity's moving tide in the early 1800s. Many thought all this labor would usher in the millennium. Timothy Smith, in his landmark book, Revivalism and Social Reform, said: The logical chronological sequence...was as follows: revivalism, reinforced by a perfectionist ethic of salvation, pressed Christians toward social duty. . . the rhetoric of the appeals for social reform. . . .

They have served in the military, constructed buildings, organized hospitals, established businesses, erected churches, formed benevolent societies, participated in athletic events, shaped the cultural landscape, entertained audiences, educated masses of school children, held political offices, and fought for respect and equality. Kentucky African American history is as diverse as the state.

Fouse family papers, 1914-1951. - 0 views

  • These are the papers of W.H. and Lizzie B. Fouse, black civic leaders in Lexington, Ky., in the first half of the twentieth century. The collection includes expense ledgers containing records of Dunbar High School, correspondence relating to the Kentucky Negro Education Association and the Kentucky and National Associations of Colored Women, a scrapbook with clippings about racial issues, and personal materials. Much of the personal materials consist of letters of sympathy sent after the death of Lizzie B. Fouse's mother died in 1939. Other materials relate to the YWCA and to the WCTU. There are also miscellaneous photographs, including several of Mrs. Fouse.

    I really liked what the University of Louisville was doing to try to impower the lives of the women students and the women living in Jefferson County. The goal of the Women's Center is to promote equality between men and women, increase the self reliance of women and to display and demonstrate everything that women do for society. The goal is to change the mindset of both men and women who are living in a different era and to show that women are capable of accomplishing anything that a man is capable of accomplishing.

Saint Peter Claver Catholic Church - 0 views

    This website gives information on one of the churches in my group project. The church was built for the black catholics in Lexington due to segregation in the two other catholic churches. The website offers the history of the church, which also had a school, even though most of the students were not catholic. Despite the racial segregation between the catholic churches in Lexington, St. Peter Claver did not recieve a black preist until the year 2000.

Yet the roots of the new rebellion were buried in the frustrations of college-educated mothers whose discontent impelled their daughters in a new direction. If first-wave feminists were inspired by the abolition movement, their great-granddaughters were swept into feminism by the civil rights movement, the attendant discussion of principles such as equality and justice, and the revolutionary ferment caused by protests against the Vietnam War. Women’s concerns were on Pres. John F. Kennedy’s agenda even before this public discussion began. In 1961 he created the President’s Commission on the Status of Women and<script src="http://adserver.adtechus.com/addyn/3.0/5308.1/1388674/0/170/ADTECH;target=_blank;grp=550;key=false;kvqsegs=D:T:2886:1362:1359:1357:1346:1341;kvtopicid=724633;kvchannel=HISTORY;misc=1291082559533"></script> appointed Eleanor Roosevelt to lead it. Its report, issued in 1963, firmly supported the nuclear family and preparing women for motherhood. But it also documented a national pattern of employment discrimination, unequal pay, legal inequality, and meagre support services for working women that needed to be corrected through legislative guarantees of equal pay for equal work, equal job opportunities, and expanded child-care services. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 offered the first guarantee, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was amended to bar employers from discriminating on the basis of sex. Some deemed these measures insufficient in a country where classified advertisements still segregated job openings by sex, where state laws restricted women’s access to contraception, and where incidences of rape and domestic violence remained undisclosed. In the late 1960s, then, the notion of a women’s rights movement took root at the same time as the civil rights movement, and women of all ages and circumstances were swept up in debates about gender, discrimination, and the nature of equality.

It also offers history on the creation of the group and what the group is currently involved with today. I found it extremely intresting that a Kentucky women born before women had the right to vote could make such a huge impact not only on a state level or a nation wide level, but on an international level, like Lena Phillips was able to accomplish in her lifetime.

Rosenwald, Julius - 0 views

  • He is best known as a part-owner and leader of Sears, Roebuck and Company, and for the Rosenwald Fund, which donated millions to support the education of African Americans and other philanthropic causes in the first half of the twentieth century.
  • Over the course of his life, Rosenwald and his fund donated over $70 million to public schools, colleges and universities, museums, Jewish charities, and black institutions. The school building program was one of the largest programs administered by the Rosenwald Fund, contributing over $4 million in matching funds to the construction of over 5,000 schools throughout America. These schools became known as "Rosenwald Schools."
