Arab Media: The Web 2.0 Revolution - 0 views

  • The Cairo News Company, which provided satellite services and equipment for Al Jazeera, the BBC and CNN, was raided by police after it transmitted footage of the food riots.
  • But new media applications were changing the rules. This was demonstrated by the arrest of a journalism student from Berkeley named James Karl Buck, who was detained along with his Egyptian interpreter as he photographed a street protest. Buck used the Twitter application on his cell phone to send a snapshot of himself and the text message “arrested” to a list serve of his contacts. His friends used the message to prompt intervention from Berkeley and the U.S. consulate. Buck was soon able to Twitter the word “free,” and mounted an online campaign to release his interpreter.
  • police finally located him and tortured him for his Facebook password and names of the other group members (the vast majority of which he didn’t know).

  • But in the United States, many would-be activists have been frustrated by the gap between an online click and concrete participation. Facebook groups and causes often swell, crest and dissipate without leaving a mark on the outside world.
  • As of August 5, 2008, Facebook listed 484,137 members in the Egypt Network. The 6 April group was alive and well with 72,274 members (six of them new).
  • There are still important differences in the way content is generated as well. The print tradition of knowledge creation tends to require more research, reflection and refinement in the process of transforming an idea from impulse to public distribution. The online environment encourages instant, reflexive responses. So the Internet as we know it has two powerful functions: as conveyor of its own immediate data, and as an extraordinary portal to traditional repositories of knowledge: the published books, reports, journalism, legal briefs and scholarly articles.
  • The Arab world has had a fundamentally different relationship to print culture, and modern published resources are sorely lacking.

InternetNews Realtime IT News - Google Display Ads in Your Pocket - 0 views

  • Google has already been selling mobile text ads through its cost-per-click AdSense program, which it is now expanding to offer contextually targeted graphical banners, formatted to fit within the constraints of the mobile browser.
  • Over the past year, Jupiter estimates that fewer than one-fifth of all companies created any type of mobile advertising. The firm projects that in the next year, 34 percent will be advertising on mobile devices, but of those, more will engage in some kind of texting campaign than search or display advertising.
  • JupiterResearch analyst Neal Strother concurs with Google's claim that mobile display ads have a higher clickthrough rate than Web display ads. A clickthrough rate of 5 percent to 6 percent for mobile ads is common, Strother said, whereas a 3 percent clickthough rate for online display ads is very high.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • Part of that success for mobile ads could relate to the novelty of the format, Strother suggested. As people grow more accustomed to seeing ads on mobile Web pages, clickthroughs will decline, the argument goes.
  • Nevertheless, Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone has shown that with a decent screen size and intuitive navigation, U.S. consumers will use their phones for activities other than talk and text messaging. Google is hoping that efforts such as its own Android initiative will lead to a new generation of handheld devices that help the mobile Web live up to its promise.
  • While "some of the bigger brands have made some serious commitments to mobile," Strather said that the tendency among advertisers is to make mobile a microcosm of an aggregate digital budget, or to treat mobile advertising as an experimental expense. "Very few companies on the advertising side have made mobile a standalone item on a line-item budget," Strother told InternetNews.com.
  • The company is trying to keep file sizes small, so that the ads do not unduly slow the load times of mobile Web pages, Agarwal said. Slow speeds have been a common complaint about the experience of browsing the Web on a mobile device.
  • Google also said it will only show one display ad per page.

We Are the Web - 0 views

  • supercomputers in part to advance us in that direction. He now believes the first real AI will emerge not in a stand-alone supercomputer like IBM's proposed 23-teraflop Blue Brain, but in the vast digital tangle of the global Machine.

  • Linking unleashes involvement and interactivity at levels once thought unfashionable or impossible. It transforms reading into navigating and enlarges small actions into powerful forces. For instance, hyperlinks made it much easier to create a seamless, scrolling street map of every town. They made it easier for people to refer to those maps. And hyperlinks made it possible for almost anyone to annotate, amend, and improve any map embedded in the Web. Cartography has gone from spectator art to participatory democracy.
  • This impulse for participation has upended the economy and is steadily turning the sphere of social networking - smart mobs, hive minds, and collaborative action - into the main event.
  • In part because of the ease of creation and dissemination, online culture is the culture.
  • All these numbers are escalating. A simple extrapolation suggests that in the near future, everyone alive will (on average) write a song, author a book, make a video, craft a weblog, and code a program. This idea is less outrageous than the notion 150 years ago that someday everyone would write a letter or take a photograph.
  • prosumption. As with blogging and BitTorrent, prosumers produce and consume at once. The producers are the audience, the act of making is the act of watching, and every link is both a point of departure and a destination.
  • planet-sized computer is comparable in complexity to a human brain.
  • In 10 years, the system will contain hundreds of millions of miles of fiber-optic neurons linking the billions of ant-smart chips embedded into manufactured products, buried in environmental sensors, staring out from satellite cameras, guiding cars, and saturating our world with enough complexity to begin to learn. We will live inside this thing.
  • The Web will be the only OS worth coding for.
  • via phone, PDA, laptop, or HDTV
  • The Machine is an unbounded thing that will take a billion windows to glimpse even part of. It is what you'll see on the other side of any screen.
  • Think of the 100 billion times per day humans click on a Web page as a way of teaching the Machine what we think is important. Each time we forge a link between words, we teach it an idea.
  • a machine that subsumes all other machines so that in effect there is only one Machine, which penetrates our lives to such a degree that it becomes essential to our identity - this will be full of surprises. Especially since it is only the beginning.

This website was created by Jonathan Harris, and constantly searches personal blogs for "I feel..." statements. Click the link to see some AMAZING animations of these statements, It's the most beautiful compilation of human emotion I've ever seen, and definitely applies to my PostSecret effect research, and basic perceptions of identity. You can even search for these statements demographically or over long periods of time. I'm in awe! Check out his TED Talk too!
