Knowledge in the Public Interest (KPI)

Mendeley is both a (free) reference manager and an "academic social network." Users can import papers they are using for research, highlight, annotate, and tag them. Mendeley will provide an appropriately formatted citation for the paper. Additionally, users can search the citations (and descriptions) of papers that others have contributed to Mendeley, as well as creating and joining groups with like-minded researchers.

Conrad Wolfram presentation on TED.com (filmed July 2010; posted Nov 2010). Wolfram argues that math applications are all around us, and that people in a ever-wider variety of workplaces are excited about math...but students are not. Wolfram argues that bringing computers into the math classroom would help improve math's relevancy -- and build excitement as well. Use the tag wolfram to look at his "knowledge engine," Wolfram Alpha.

"Inside Higher Ed is the online source for news, opinion and jobs for all of higher education." In addition to a daily e-mail, there are also a variety of RSS feeds.

Home page of the popular print- and web-based journal. There are some interesting RSS feeds, including Wired Campus and a community college e-newsletter.

Program of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the page includes program news, news of recent grants and publications, and the relevant program staff.

This site, a favorite resource of KPI staff, is billed as "Australia's free online network for educators." The site also offers a great e-newsletter.

Billed as the "American Education News Site of Record," Education Week is an important site for education news. Subscription is required to read some of the articles on this site. There are free subscriptions to e-newsletters available, as well as free short-term subscriptions.

"Connecting the nonprofit world with news, jobs, and ideas," the Chronicle of Philanthropy is a good site to keep up to date with philanthropy, non-profits, and foundations.

"EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology." You can subscribe to RSS feeds of EDUCAUSE publications (EDUCAUSE Quarterly and EDUCAUSE Review), as well as podcasts and other resources.

The self-declared "Community of Practice on Communities of Practice," this site offers a variety of opportunities for connection, from education programs to a wiki to members' blogs.
