As per the About Us page, this resource library, part of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), offers a searchable database of conference presentations/handouts, PowerPoint lectures, learning modules, digital images, audio and video files, sample patient cases, etc. The library began with a 3-year, $400,000 grant from the National Library of Medicine, and is supported by a small editorial team.

Based at the Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education at the University of Chicago, "RWB is a home for open research in education." The project promotes collaborative research, inviting participants to join one or more communities and to participate in events like online webinars. The Resources database appears to be expansive and allows users to rate the resources that they use.

Published by CMA (Cox, Matthews, and Associates, Inc.), Diverse is an online magazine that looks at higher education through the lens of diversity. In addition to looking at basics like news, opinions, and jobs, the site also provides special reports and a variety of multimedia offerings. Currently on the home page, a searchable database of Top 100 Minority Degree Producers with subsets for AA, undergrad and graduate degrees

eduTecher is a great place to look at new educational technologies, or to find just the right technology to do a job (e.g. document collaboration or word clouds). Each tool is reviewed by the staff, and users can search the database various ways. While many tools have a K-12 focus, there are plenty that would be useful in postsecondary education as well.

A collection of related studies looking at college completion and student success from the ECS Research Studies Database. Studies are from a variety of sources -- not the ECS (e.g. Journal of Higher Education, National Bureau of Economic Research, and American Educational Research Journal).

This database (launched summer 2010) is a collaboration of various federal agencies (including the Office of Educational Technology, part of the US Dept of Education) that bring together "federal learning resources and primary source materials." Use the learning_registry tag to find background information.

Created by Pennsylvania's Department of Education, and part of the Standards Aligned System (SAS), launched March 2010. Database allows educators to search for appropriate digital materials for use in the classroom.

In this post, Midgley announces the government's plan to "make its educational resources much easier to find and use through a new Learning Registry." The New Leaders for New Schools principal-training program has launched a new version of its online portal for the Effective Practice Incentive Community (EPIC). The article reports that the portal is a "Web-based compendium of professional-development resources for principals, staff-development coaches, and teachers." The article links to the database. This is the online business journal of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to regularly posting new articles, the site offers a searchable database of over 1500 articles and research abstracts. Podcasts are also available.

This site (currently in Beta) was founded by James Gee and is essentially a database of in-progress projects, begging for feedback/interaction/collaboration with and by others.

Announcement of a grant from the Mellon Foundation for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington to underwrite the Digital Humanities Commons.. "The Commons will enable faculty and graduate students to collaborate together with librarians, engineers and designers to animate their scholarship with new visualization tools and dynamic databases..."

From this page, "The Peer Review of Teaching Project (PRTP) provides faculty with a structured and practical model that combines inquiry into the intellectual work of a course, careful investigation of student understanding and performance, and faculty reflection on teaching effectiveness." The site was developed as an "international repository for course portfolios written by faculty...."

Part of UD's Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education, this program offers workshops at the K-12 or post-secondary level for how instructors can integrate problem-based learning into their own classrooms. The PBL Clearinghouse, a "peer-reviewed online resource" collects PBL problems and articles. Additionally, the site offers resources including sample syllabi and projects.

By M. Ginsburg and S. Weisband, Proceedings of the 37th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences - 2004. Written in 2004, this article is somewhat dated (e.g. before the notion of the "social network" really took hold). That said, the article looks at a subscription-based virtual community, the Internet Chess Club, and finds that the real key to success is a carefully structured 3-tier approach to volunteering. Some volunteers help/coach new users; others are available to handle administrative tasks and volunteer managers run on-demand tournaments. Volunteers gain status and recognition, as well as the benefit of a private sub-community in which they can communicate with each other. NOTE: As of Jan 2012, the club is still in existence.

Librarian notes: While much here does not apply to the current manifestation of our e-communities, the structure and function of the various volunteer roles is very interesting, as is the "communication segmentation strategies" to filter out information overload. An impressive database of the community's work (in this case chess matches) is discussed as well.

With the tagline "search, recommend, collaborate, remix," Folksemantic claims over 110,000 OERs. The product was developed for the Center for Open and Sustainable Learning. At the current time (Sept 2010), they are asking for help evaluating their recommender tool.

Published by the University of Nottingham (UK). This site is a "continually updated collection of peer-reviewed academic development resources...[ranging from] "2-5 minute videos [to] 500-1000 word texts...." There are a variety of entry points to access the materials, ranging from discipline areas (on this page) to themes (see Teaching & Learning themes at the top). I also like the Guest editor block (this page, lower left), where a faculty member writes a brief editorial and selects resources of interest.
