Posted by Clay Johnson, 10/25/2011 on ExpertLabs In the context of experts' conversations with government, the author of this post argues that tools such as IdeaScale, Google Moderator and UserVoice are useful for brainstorming but not the best method for a true dialog. These tools give government an excuse to "not" participate with people where they are. The comments on a government site, i.e. the dialogue on evolving data.gov (via IdeaScale) shouldn't replace "participating with practicitioners," which should happen where they are. (i.e. in a Jam, I.F.) Expert Labs aims to get more people involved in order to make policy better. Expert Labs publishes reports, constantly updates their blog and has developed a tool, ThinkUp, that enables users to automatically archive data and communications across Facebook, Twitter and Google+, encouraging engagement on these networks.

[According to Wikipedia, "Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is a collection of standards and specifications for web-based e-learning."]. It appears to relate to learning analytics, and the blogger describes applications in the workplace (not merely for post-secondary education).

In this post on authoring "open textbooks," the author looks at the process of book sprints, which were borrowed from coders in the open source and hacker communities. In a book sprint, a group of interested participants come together with the goal of creating a book (or book-like) project. In addition to a very general outline of the process, the post recommends some tools that a group might use, as well as a link to some sample books.

Both the tools and the process seem interesting. How might this process be applied to a KPI project...in lieu of a Jam? In conjunction with a Jam? As the Jam take-away?

This is a commercial site that offers "integrated open source learning services." Of particular interest to KPI are some of the Moodle-related offerings incuding ELIS (Enterprise Learning Intelligence Suite). The company offers a variety of services (hosting, learning services, webinars), as well as blogs.

This website,created by the Clinton RESA, Ingham ISD, Macomb ISD & Shiawassee RESD, offers 21 technology concepts (e.g. blogs, digital citizenship, online video resources) that teachers might want to incorporate into their classrooms. While the site is aimed at K-12 teachers, it is likely that teachers at all levels can find something worthwhile here. NOTE: the site was built in 2008; in the fast-moving 2.0 world, there might be tools that are since out of date.

This blog is "a hub for developing WordPress plugins for Education."

Diana recommended this site as a WordPress tutorial, as we move forward in our use of WordPress.

This post refers to a Georgetown University report titled Help Wanted: Projections of Jobs and Education Requirements through 2010, which argues that there will not be enough people in the workforce with Associate's degrees (or better) to fill the job needs of 2018.

A program of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Statway focuses on helping community college students learn basic skills in statistics, data analysis, and quantitative reasoning as part of a one-year pathway. The ultimate goal of this pathway is preparation for college-level statistics. This home page to Statway also includes links to the project blog (called Pathways Connection) and to the project's mailing list. There are 19 community colleges affiliated with this project.

Richardson's main focus seems to be K-12 (as is the focus of many of the very interesting comments that this post has received), but the questions he asks are relevant to students of all ages and at all levels: how do we measure more esoteric qualities like the ability to follow "passion," how to "earn...a living solving problems and helping to make the world a better place." It's as much about the quality of education as of assessment.

The model for school change that Jacobs outlines looks very similar to the GSCC project, in that both look at what's working and how it might be replicated, focusing on the positive (solution) rather than the more negative (problem). NOTE: The Harvard Business Review article that Jacobs refers to was published in 2005.

Stephen Downes is considered one of the leading authorities on online learning. In addition to this blog, he publishes widely and authors an email that is available daily or weekly, OLDaily.
