The conversation around AI now is too focused on the question of how AI can replace agent interaction, which is missing the point. The aim of AI shouldn't be to replace human interaction, but to improve human interaction.

Human-Computer Interaction takes big leaps every once in a while. The next generation of speech interfaces is one of those leaps. Humans are increasingly going to be interacting with devices that are able to listen to us and talk back.

Teaching computers to understand casual, contextual conversation in every language and accent is key to this quest to normalise our interactions with computers and to place Google even more squarely at the centre of our lives.

Gamification expert Yu-Kai Chou has developed a framework that takes a human-centered approach to analyzing gaming strategies. This changes the focus to how the user interacts with the training program or business application as well as the rewards, gains or detriments that can occur. He created a framework called Octalysis, which can be used to assess and visually represent how well strategies are implemented based on core drives, which then fall into quadrants of deeper understanding.

Virtual assistants get infuriating when they fail to do something we expect to be within their capabilities. Researchers are interested in studying how people form expectations about what such systems can and can't do-and how virtual assistants themselves might be designed to nudge us toward only asking things that won't lead to disappointment. One of the research questions is how do you reset a user's expectations on the fly when they're interacting with a virtual assistant.
