In the Chapter "What Should We Teach? Rethinking Literacy" from the book Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture, by Henry Jenkins with Ravi Purushotma, Margaret Weigel, Katie Clinton, and Alice J. Robison, it contemplates what to do about new literacies. The book talks about how it is just as important for students to learn old literacies, like reading and writing, than it is to learn new literacies as well, digital media. They describe the new literacy culture as participatory culture.

In Rethinking Education in The Age of Technology - The Digital Revolution and Schooling in America, Allan Collins and Richard Halverson jump straight into questioning whether schools are using new technologies to their advantage.

Social media should play a role in eliminating the problem of cyber bullying. Popular sites such as Facebook and MySpace have a big influence on teens and should be the ones promoting solutions to this issue. These social networks should create stricter penalties against digital bullies.

In this article I have read was Understanding Multimedia Learning: Integrating multimedia in the K-12 classroom. I came across this article when I was messing around on the Brain Pop site. As I was reading through this article they pointed out that the students in K-12 are different in the way that they are "Digital Natives." They use this term as to describe who has grown up with technology verses people that have not. This describes the people who have never known of a world without technology.

In this chapter, Whispers in the Classsroom, the author Sarita Yardi discusses how we can import kids internet use home into the classroom, through simple procedure's such as chartrooms and exploring the internet. The author uses various studies to show simple tools could enhance student learning as well as motivate them to try to learn. On study in particular was done at a university, where a chat room was created. As the year progresses students began to log onto to the chat room more and at the end of the year there were over "300,000 user entries."

article focused on the multiple forms of medias a student uses for media purposes and for their role on their local school's board. The article did two case studies, and their goal was to understand how we use technology

This talks about how social medias such as Facebook, texting, and other social networking technologies are used to bridge the gap between formal and informal learning. Students collaborate or "meet" to discuss issues in the "adult world"

This article is about how students are using digital medias as apart of their learning. The authors also define what they believe to be social and cultural tools of technology and how they are used.

In this video Yi talks about the increase usage of google and how it has improve over the years and had been made easier for everyone to use. But he states a problem about how frequently everyone uses it without evaluating to see if the informations are actually accurate.

In the book "Digital media, youth, and credibility" by Miriam J. Metzger and Andrew J. Flanagin, they discuss the impact of standardized testing in classrooms. Through their perspective the two main subjects of standardized testing are math and English, leaving other subjects neglected. The passing of "No Child Left Behind" is brought up as the beginning of the standardized testing phenomena.

I thought this article was very interesting. The article really made me think about how social digital media can be affected by the government.

Wesch talk about new forms of literacy

The news that TiVo is to stop selling its digital video recorders (DVRs) in "Britain looks like final proof that the device has flopped. Best-known for its ad-skipping ability, TiVo also bred a scary new television culture in which the intelligent set-top box guesses your tastes and records viewing on your behalf." This is from the abstract. I found this journal article interesting.

This is a blog about a book by Sherry Turkle called "Alone Together." Her book is about why the use of technology has made us alone. She focuses on technology has change our way of interaction.

Heres a video and article where sherry turkle expresses her thoughts of how 'we are alone together' with the idea that we need to control technology and pay attention to people around us.

This video was made by Dan Brown an internet blogger on youtube. He does this video to express his idea that educators to move along with world in the advancement of digital media, if they don't they will be left behind in the world. He lets educators know that they so far they are not preparing students for the real world.
