    Some useful tips not just for teenagers, but for any users of social media looking to protect their privacy and online. I particularly liked the tip on modeling proper social media use for teens. The district I am in has blocked all social media sites (even Pinterest!) and so the students use VPNs to get around the blocks instead of allowing teachers and others to realistically demonstrate how to navigate social media sites in a healthy way it becomes something that is forbidden to be on.

    Koohang, Paliszkiewicz, & Goluchowski stress the importance of privacy and trust when using social media. Through their research model, social media privacy concerns, or SMPC were focused on. These SMPCs were collection, secondary usage, errors, improper access, control and awareness of trust and risk regarding users. They found that users with greater privacy concerns were less likely to trust social media platforms with their personal information. Users with higher privacy concerns also felt it more risky to disclose more personal information to the platform.

    The new cultural developments problematize the previous policy frames that governed educational technology when the CIPA was set in place. The policy argument of expanding youth access to computing via schools becomes weak if young people prefer to use new media away from school. Furthermore, young people appear to engage in far more creative and compelling learning behaviors with new media outside of school, with few opportunities within classroom walls.

    Using the results of interviews conducted with twenty-two 14 - 18 year olds​, this study looks at how adolescents use social media platforms to regulate emotions. Findings include that adolescents do us different platforms to share different emotions. In the case of the subjects in this study Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram were used to share positive emotions and Messenger and Twitter to share negative emotions.

    American youth are interested in civic engagement as well as in playing with media. A research team commissioned by MTV interviewed more than twelve hundred young people, conducted expert interviews and ethnographies, and took a national poll of a representative sample ages 12-24, between December 2005 and April 2006. The research found, 70% believing in the importance of helping the community, 68% already doing something to support a cause on a monthly basis and 82% describing themselves at least somewhat involved. From this data, it does seem that the majority of young people are convinced that civic engagement (i.e., supporting a social cause of some kind) is something they should be involved. However, there is a strong disparity between interest and involvement, an "activation gap" and there is significant room for growth.

The authors argue that teenagers do care about privacy and have developed mechanisms that allow them to maintain their privacy while still participating in online environments. They also suggest that our understanding of online privacy should shift from an individual context to incorporate a "networked context".
