BBC News - Internet access is 'a fundamental right' - 1 views

  •
Almost four in five people around the world believe that access to the internet is a fundamental right, a poll for the BBC World Service suggests. The survey - of more than 27,000 adults across 26 countries - found strong support for net access on both sides of the digital divide.
  •
This BBC article is based on a extensive survey conducted over 26 countries about people's attitudes towards internet access. Apparently it is now considered a fundamental human right, along with access to basic infrastructure like roads and water.

Interesting interactive chart showing the number of Internet users in different countries from 1998 until 2008. Notice the discrepancies between developed and underdeveloped countries. Still skeptical of the digital divide?
  •
Useful graphic created by the BBC which shows the spread of the internet from 1998-2008 across the world. Interesting to note the speed with which China and parts of South American grew. From 2001-2008 they moved from 0-5% usage - 26-30% usage.

BBC News - World wakes up to digital divide - 1 views

  •
There is a widening gap in the digital divide, especially in minority communities in the developed world.
  •
The digital divide is being decreased - but there are still widespread inequalities. Within one continent there are countries with radically different percentages of citizens online. There are great benefits from once isolated communities in terms of sharing their heritage online, as well as accessing healthcare.

A BBC article that provides us with international data and figures about the digital divide.

BBC News - Yahoo criticised by Alibaba for 'reckless' China stance - 0 views

  • Yahoo criticised by Alibaba for 'reckless' China stance Yahoo is reported to have been targeted by hackers in China Yahoo's partner in China has called the US internet giant "reckless" for supporting Google in its stand-off with Beijing over alleged cyber-attacks.Yahoo said it was "aligned" with Google's position that the violati
  • Yahoo said it was "aligned" with Google's position that the violation of internet privacy was deeply disturbing and something that had to be opposed. But an Alibaba Group spokesman said on Saturday it did not "share this view".
  •
Google speaks out on censorship and the violation of user privacy in China. Yahoo in the US agrees but its Chinese partner Alibaba Group does not. Are they afraid of a backlash from Beijing and fear for their ungoing business success? Makes me wonder how bad the quagmire in China really is...

BBC News - Evan Williams says Twitter fundamental to government - 0 views

  • Social networks will become a fundamental way we communicate with our governments, businesses and loved ones, Twitter co-founder Evan Williams has told the BBC.
  • Likewise, the White House has acknowledged the importance of Twitter correspondence - it recently announced that its tweets will be archived in accordance with the Presidential Records Act of 1978.
  • "I think Twitter will be a fundamental part of how people interact with their government," continued Mr Williams. "I think it will be how you get personal, customised information from every entity you care about, from your local café to your government, from your politician to your friends and family."
  •
The White House will now archive its tweets. Wonder what role Twitter will play in the not-so-far-away 2012 US presidential campaign. If Obama runs for re-election... will he start the race ahead?

BBC News - Former Mexico presidential candidate 'missing' - 1 views

  • The BBC's Inma Gil in Mexico City says the disappearance of the man known as "Diego the boss" has sparked all sorts of speculation in a country ravaged by drug related violence.
  • Some local media reported he had been kidnapped, others that he had been killed.
  •
Manuel Espino, leader of the PAN, Mexico's conservative party, twitted that Diego Fernandez de Ceballos, the politician who is missing, had been killed. He later said sorry and admited the information was not confirmed/true. But was it? Twitter's immediacy can put politicians in the spotlight even if that is not their intention.

  •
Although many attempts have been made to regulate the trade of many types of endangered species over the internet, all have failed. It is a perfect example of the problems associated with a world-wide need for cooperation in order to achieve regulation of some kind of the internet.

BBC News - Taliban harness power of the web - 0 views

  •
This article refers to the internet as the "weapon of choice" for the Taliban. The reason the article gives for why the internet is deemed a weapon in this case is due to the distribution of misinformation. If this is the case the internet should deemed to be a weapon in the hands of any government in the world. Misleading information is a problem everywhere and this is why people need to be diligent when looking at information on the web.

Teachers are very much aware and very much worried on how social networking sites, particularly Facebook, are being used by students to "bully" and spread false allegations about them. Not only professional reputations are at stake in acts like these, but hate sites will surely affect the personal lives of teachers as well.

UK: Lords pass "Digital Economy Bill" - 0 views

  •
The "Digital Economy Bill" has been passed by the Lords and is now expected to be rushed through the Commons before the general elections. Despite criticism by the UK's major telecommunication providers and global internet giants like Google, the government said it was still committed to giving courts the power to block websites which are infringing copyright. The bill is mainly aiming to tackle internet privacy. Some of it's paragraphs however could lead to internet censorship.
