Pupils should be able to name a selection of light sources, including the sun, and identify some of the uses of light in the environment. The first two parts of the activity asks pupils to sort a collection of items into those which are sources of light and those which are not. The rest of the activity deals with uses of light in the environment, asking pupils to identify the source of light in a picture and to say what the light is used for.

What becomes clear, as you dive further into the emerging research that connects what we know about learning, mindsets, dispositions for learning and the development of mathematical understandings, is that a new approach is required. We need to move away from memorisation and rule based simplifications of mathematics and embrace a model of learning that is challenging and exciting. We can and should be emerging all our students in the beauty and power of mathematics in learning environments full of multiple representations, rich dialogue and collaborative learning.

While laying pavers and digging a ditch I had a chance to reflect on the difficulties facing education in a country like this. I came away with questions, wondering and few answers.

We might have the best of intentions but unless each of our messaging systems align, we are unlikely to achieve success. So where do our efforts go wrong and what else might we change so that student agency is genuinely a part of our learning environment?
