UNC-Greensboro wins $7.7M grant for technology integration, STEM teacher training - Gre... - 0 views

  •
UNC-Greensboro won a massive grant of $7.7 million that will go towards technology integration. The article appealed to me because I am a math major, and the money is specifically meant for training future educators in the fields of science, technology and engineering and math. In my opinion, this is a big step in other schools possibly winning similar large grants. Additionally, it shows the recognition of large schools taking part in technology integration.

Duncan: Technology is key to closing achievement gap - 0 views

  •
In this article Education Secretary Arne Duncan highlights how the achievement gaps within our schools can be closed by the increase investment in technology use in all classrooms. He states that 2/3 of teachers wish they had more technology in the classrooms which is being limited due a high percentage of schools not having adequate bandwidth or access to high-speed internet. As future teachers who are learning now how to integrate technology into our classrooms this article is important to our class because it shows that most schools do not really have the opportunity to utilize this knowledge. But, the actions of Duncan and other reforms are trying to ensure that we as teachers receive the professional development and resources available so we can integrate our technological knowledge in the classroom.

Connections Wanted Form #GRA14 - 0 views

I love the one book program that our district runs, where everyone in town reads the same book and we have an author visit as a wrap up. I have met some new and interesting people that way. Having that collective understanding on just one thing is vital to extending relationships amongst people who would normally never connect. The more you know about people around you, the more you care. The global read-aloud can achieve that same interconnectedness.

See what happens in a radically innovative classroom - 0 views

Depicted in the documentary "If You Build It', it shows 10 high school teens in Bertie County helping their local community make a difference and building a farmers market. Instead of sitting in desks and learning in a classroom all day, they took to the land and began to build. They incorporated hands-on shop lessons and used technology to map out the design of the farmers market. They were instructed to think outside of  the box which made their experience all the more valuable.

This is an excellent post that discusses the pros and cons of digital reading versus paperback reading. You may want to read up and think about how have your students optimize their digital reading if they will be reading off of ipads instead of paperback books.

This article explains why it is important to teach students about technology and how we should be using it in the classrooms rather than just on special occasions in a computer lab. Technology is evolving and taking the place of other tools such as textbooks and calculators. It says that students are already using this technology so instead of turning off all electronics we should teach them how to use it efficiently.

Technology Integration in the Classroom - 0 views

This article basically discusses what technology integration is. Then it goes into why it is important. One of the things discussed is that kids today are growing up in a strong technology based world and it is important for them not to only learn the basics but what is needed for everyday life

I agree that students should definitely be using more technology now days because its what they're used to. But I believe that younger students should be given a chance first to learn without technology. Normal teaching(without technology) can still work. We shouldn't give up on it.
  •
Integrating technology at a young age is important so they can begin to learn how to use tools they will use for the rest of their lives. I don't think that teaching should be strictly based off technology though because it can become distracting sometimes.
  •
It is a true balancing act. Because of the workforce skills students will need when they graduate the push is on to have them use technology often and well. Unfortunately, it takes skill to integrate technology in the most appropriate manner and to its best advantage.
  •
I think that we need to integrate technology into the classroom at a young age because the youth will be using technology going forward for the rest of their lives. And for them to be successful in school, they should begin to use technology to help them.

"In order to help educators integrate technology effectively, we have compiled a list of technology tools focused on learning goals consistent with the CRCD framework. Unlike other lists that promote "cool tools," yet leave teachers wondering about purposeful educational integration, our list is driven by specific learning goals that promote critical-thinking, creativity, collaboration, and community-mindedness. We hope you will find our list useful."

Obama spotlights connected learning in State of the Union address - 0 views

The article speaks about President Obama's delivering his State of the Union address, and his first line was about the commitment of passionate teachers who have help increase graduation rates across the country. The important thing delighting education technology leaders, Obama made the announcement about delivering high-speed broadband to 15,000 schools. This would result in 20 million students with new digital learning opportunities. President Obama also spoke about the Race to the Top program, which he said "has helped states raise expectations and performance." Obama talked about how it requires everything from more challenging curricula and more demanding parents to better support for teachers and new ways to measure how well our kids think, not how well they can fill in a bubble on a test.
