Great apps Amanda!! I'm in the process of teaching my six year old to read and write as she attends an all Chinese kindergarten and is not learning any English. After an eight hour school day she really resists any more work that I try to do with her, which is very frustrating for both of us. She does however LOVE the iPad and I'll be trying some of the kindergarten specific apps mentioned in the article. Hopefully she won't even realise she is learning while playing. When we return to Australia she will be behind in reading (as our main focus for her right now is Mandarin) and will require targeted help.

Very helpful site!! The world is changing and we (as future teachers) should all be exposed to all the various ways that we can engage students in constructing and actively engaging in their own learning. If I was a child with dufficulties in reading I would rather engage with an Ipad rather than any other traditional way of teaching. Again this site is a proof of what a useful tool ICT can be and the positive results it gives when used in the right way.

I read this article today and it made me think about the 'older' generations and how they cope with the new technology. It isn't going to be long and we'll become the 'older' generation. How long until we are overwhelmed with a variety of 'new' technologies we can't cope and just go back to our 'old' ways, in this case sending a letter. I'm sure some children have never sent a letter through the post office!! I also love the offer of the CEO to help teach the gentleman how to use online shopping!!

Fair comment about the letter at the post office, but according to my own kids "the post office is where you pick up stuff from ebay" so I guess the concept is still there just the context has changed.

Unfortunately are lot of teachers are "the older generation" as far as classroom practices are concerned. Often using technology means booking a computer labs to allow students to type their assignments (so they can read their hand writing); allowing students to email completed work instead of handing in paper copies or using a data projector to show the class a power point presentation.

Here, here, I so agree with you Jackie so often parents only find themselves in school to make a complaint or the like never have I seen a parent just wanting to spend time in their childs classroom just to see. It would be beneficial for all if there were time when this could happen.

Connections with parents is important. In fact, it's one of the AITSL professional standards. But I wonder why parents don't spend more time in their child's classroom? I'm sure there would be many parents (but perhaps not all) who want to be more involved with their child's education, but who can't for various reasons. I wonder if we can make it easier for them to be involved?

Equality is something that would be missed in a flipped classroom. With the cost of living increasing not all families are going to afford the technology that a flipped classroom requires students to have access to at home.

Wouldn't lack of equality be bridged if the students who didn't have access to the internet went to school early or stayed back a bit later to listen to the videos. If there was supervision, what difference would it make being at school or at home for the video presentation?

I agree with a comment made above too, that maybe the school day needs to be re-arranged if a flipped classroom pedagogy is going to be introduced - give students time during normal school hours to watch the videos then have the classroom discussion
