  • As learning gains are predicted by study hours, not by class hours, this argument would hold up only if lectures were good at increasing the former and they are not: indeed, the more lectures there are, the fewer learning hours each generates.
  • There are alternatives to lecturing that have a much better record of generating learning hours, and some cost nothing. The only potential problem is that they may require more effort from students

    Short article covering some of the research about the limitations of lectures. For example, "For some educational goals, no alternative has ever been discovered that is less effective than lecturing, including, in some cases, no teaching at all" But also making the broader point that research has yet to effectively explore all of the possible applications of lectures. An example of evidence that can be used to guide pedagogical decision making.

    An interesting article particularly comments made on study hours. My thoughts are that some learners do gain the most out of independent study and / or reading information whereas others achieve most in class listening to lectures... I don't agree that there is a 'one size fits all' approach rather that teaching should be delivered in multiple ways so as to meet the learning needs of a diverse student cohort.

    Hi Steph, WOW! That does seem impossible. I can imagine phones will go holographic in the future, but I have no idea how it will be possible to touch through a phone and touch carpet or different materials. It is defiantly a good resource that provides food for thought.

Particularly, I can see this in regards to literacy and numeracy. Activating parts of the brain that can help with this engagement is essential for students with Special needs

    That is so cool! Imagine how much harder it would have been for teachers ten years ago, they probably wouldn't even have imagined this kind of thing would be possible. It makes you wonder what technology will be like in the next ten years! In the next five years even!! Maybe special education schools and units won't be necessary anymore because technology will enable all students to be integrated!

      Experience in EDC3100 supports this. People tend to use ICT to enhance existing methods, rather than for transforming what they do. Especially in Assignment 3 (which is based on Professional Experience).
  • The existence of formal and informal communities of practice and peer networks can be important tools to support ICT in education initiatives and activities. Such support mechanisms can be facilitated through the use of ICTs.

  • chool begins here in Victoria on Tuesday. It is the first time in ten years that I have not spent the summer busily preparing for the new school year. That has been a strange feeling.
  • My daughter, Novalie, is 5.5 months old and I am absolutely loving motherhood. While I won’t be in the classroom this year, apart from some possible replacement teaching, I’m thankful that there are still ways to keep up with education.
