Learning and Sharing with Ms. Lirenman: Using Twitter in a Primary Classroom - 1 views

  • t's a great way for the parents to know what's going on in the classroom at the exact time a tweet is being sent
  • We also used twitter this year to connect with people.
  • It's pretty powerful when a six and seven year old writes something to someone they look up to and that person takes the time to respond back to them.

  • Using the characters from Little Red Riding Hood we pretended to be one of them and tweeted out in their voice

I thought I'd post this short movie. It's an example of ICT activities being done in a class I had my last practicum in. It is a simple activity that the teacher did, using ICTs that were readily availble.. The teacher takes a traditional printed text being used in guided reading (PM readers) and helps the students produce a digital text based on the language used in the original text. Students select images from google images and then use a digital camera to take photos or video, and manipulate the images using IWB software, to place themselves in the digital text. The images are uploaeded into Movie Maker where additonal text, ddialogue and sound are added. The finished artefact is then uploaded toYouTube so that it can be placed on the school website for sharing. The students and their families can view the new digital text at home. The movie is also presented at the school assembly. The teacher does ICT activities like this on a regular basis in English. If you google Tyalgum Public School and click on More News you can view other ICT activities the Kindergarten, Year , Year 2 class did. I think this type of ICT activity gives the students a sense of ownership of their learning.

This is a great activity. Just emphasises how important it is that we know how to use all of these ICTs in the classroom because if we don't know them this activity could take a long time or ICTs wouldn't be used in such a great way. Out of interest how long did it take?

I would argue that this is the attitude of the 21st century as well.

Maybe we need to change the classroom environment to cater for this.
  • Not one single teacher in the schools my sons attended has an email address available for parents. I’ve attended innumerable educational conferences where only a handful of the participants used Twitter.

      This I find quite shocking.
  • Across the world young people have collaborated on Blogs, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to bring down entire regimes and force political change. Not one of them has been on a digital literacy course. And, in any case, who are these older teachers who know enough about digital literacy to teach these young people? And how do they teach it – through collaborative, communication on media using social media – NO. By and large, in educational institutions, this stuff is shunned, restricted, even banned. We learn digital literacy by doing, largely outside of academe.
  • Was there a sudden break between these skills in the last century compared to this century? No. What’s changed is the need to understand the wider range of possible communication channels. This comes through mass adoption and practice, not formal education.
  • I’ve seen no evidence that teachers have the disposition, or training, to teach these skills.
  •
This Blog argues against the need to teach 21st century skills. It's a little controversial, what do you think?

What you know and how you will learn: Elements of reflection - 2 views

  • The following draws on the five elements of reflection identified by Ullmann et al (2012), these five are: Description of an experience. Personal experience. Critical analysis. Taking perspectives into account. An outcome of reflection. In short, when you are reflecting on your blog, aim to ensure that all five elements are present.

Enjoyed the video showing how technology can teach children in a fun and engaging way to learn but also requiring them to engage in real life problem solving, writing and reflection. Interesting how they chose to access the program from home too. That says a lot. I thought that this would be more middle years teaching. Do you think this could be used in Primary?

TouchPico Projector Turns Any Wall Into a Touchscreen - 6 views

While perhaps not 100% perfect for use in a school, this is a sign of things to come. A day when those Interactive White Boards are seen as klunky and old-fashioned.
  •
How times have changed since the good old Overhead Projector! I remember the days where the teacher would have folders of plastic with class notes on them and having the now very ancient projector on the table. Whereas now the amazing things that projectors and even whiteboards can do has really enhanced the learning environment.
