A teacher mum keeping up with the times - 5 views

  • chool begins here in Victoria on Tuesday. It is the first time in ten years that I have not spent the summer busily preparing for the new school year. That has been a strange feeling.
  • My daughter, Novalie, is 5.5 months old and I am absolutely loving motherhood. While I won’t be in the classroom this year, apart from some possible replacement teaching, I’m thankful that there are still ways to keep up with education.
  • There was a time, not so long ago, when maternity leave would mean you’re out of the ‘education loop’. Now, with blogs, Twitter and other online resources, the education community is at your finger tips.

Great use of ICT to keep her skills current and to meet current trends and changes.
  • recently wrote some tips for graduate teachers on the excellent ABC Splash site which may be of interest to educators beginning their careers next week. I enjoyed having the chance to reflect back on my own learning journey.

This link could be useful to many of us in the near future.

This is kathleen Morris and her blog page is about how to incorporate blogging into her grade 4 classroom. Even though Kathleen is on maternity leave I believe the information posted in 2013 is relevant to my assignment reasons. Another note Kathleen was a team teaching partner to Kelly Jordan who has launched her own blog this year.

Although Kathleen is on maternity leave at the moment I found her blog posts both inspirational and incredibly helpful. She provides links to other helpful blogs as well as tips for new educators on how to stay connected. Kathleen is also a big advocator of integrating technology into our class rooms.
  •
This blog is by Kathleen Morris. She is a primary school teacher in Victoria. She has a wealth of knowledge on her blog and I have been reading a post about integrating blogging into the school classroom.
  •
Whilst a little outdated the information is relevant and has great ideas on how to integrate ICT into Literacy.
  •

On Not Banning Laptops in the Classroom - Techist: Teaching, Technology, History, & Inn... - 0 views

  • Those studies about the wonders of handwriting all suffer from the same set of flaws, namely, a) that they don’t actually work with students who have been taught to use their laptops or devices for taking notes. That is, they all hand students devices and tell them to take notes in the same way they would in written form. In some cases those devices don’t have keyboards; in some cases they don’t provide software tools to use (there are some great ones, but doing it in say, Word, isn’t going to maximize the options digital spaces allow), in some cases the devices are not ones the students use themselves and with which they are comfortable. And b) the studies are almost always focused on learning in large lecture classes or classes in which the assessment of success is performance on a standardized (typically multiple-choice) test, not in the ways that many, many classes operate, and not a measure that many of us use in our own classes. And c) they don’t actually attempt to integrate the devices into the classes in question,
  • I have plenty of conversations with students about how to take notes already. Most of the time their problem isn’t which device (pencil, laptop, phone, quill) they use to take those notes, but how to take them and how to use them to learn based on their own experiences, learning styles, and discipline
  •
While the post is focused on Universities, there are a number of interesting points. Perhaps of most interest is the explanation why much of the research claiming that taking notes by hand writing is better than using a laptop/table.

Equity issues need to be addressed though
  • Avoiding the ICT trapStudents encounter ICT in many areas of their lives and it is essential that we provide them with opportunities to explore the technology and encourage them to use it as a learning tool. However it is important that teachers avoid the trap of using technology for the sake of it, or in order to check the technology box on their faculty registration sheet, or as an add-on to a lesson.
  • Literacy in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is fundamental to life in our modern technological society. To equip students to be literate life long learners and global citizens of the 21st century we must successfully integrate ICT into both the English curriculum and English pedagogical practice.ICT is a valuable tool to enhance teaching and learning. For teachers ICT is a professional resource, a mode of classroom delivery, and a source of valid and valuable text types. For students, ICT provides opportunities to communicate more effectively and to develop literacy skills including skills in critical literacy. It is a valuable tool for researching, composing and responding, and viewing and representing in English.

The use of ICT in our schools, is a great way to engage children that are disengaged from learning in the classroom
    • mindofmrsbarrett

I agree, there are many children that find the ability to engage with subject content when it is delivered in innovative ways. This can also be a way of distracting students from learning, taking students away from composing written pieces and being distracted by the aesthetics of presentation mode.

      Week 1 EDC3100
  • What the research tells usResearch indicates that to implement ICT successfully in their classrooms teachers must ...understand what visual literacy is and rethink what learning to read and write means in the 21st century. (Goodwyn et al 1997; Reid et al, 2002) The research also indicates that ICT is most effective when embedded in the curriculum, and integrated into units of work (Dickinson, 1998). English teachers can maximize the impact of ICT in their classrooms by ensuring that they and their students use ICT as an integral part of lessons, present ideas dynamically, and use a range of media. (Becta, 2006). ICT should be integrated in such a way as to require purposeful application and meaningful engagement with the technology. For example:while pupils are using a desk top publishing package to create a school newspaper they are also developing their ability to communicate more effectively. This provides both a context and a meaning for the ICT activity. Taking the IT out of context and teaching IT skills separately, not only decontextualises ICT but also places additional burdens on curriculum time. The use of ICT therefore should be a meaningful part of an activity where it is used to consolidate or extend pupils' learning. (Lewisham ICT Training for Teachers,2006)To implement ICT successfully in their classrooms teachers also need to:identify how ICT can be used to meet specific objectives within the English curriculum to improve pupils attainment (Moseley et al,1999)understand that successful use of ICT depends on other factors such as pupils’ work in the classroom away from the computer, discussions between pupils and between pupils and their teacher, and the ways in which pupils interact with each other at the computer (Mc Cormick and Scrimshaw,2001 cited in Becta, 2005)
  •
I am starting to understand how ICTs can be and powerful tool in the classroom after having a mostly negative perception of ICTs in classrooms. It's important for educators to demonstrate and model to students how ICTs can be used to build/ share knowledge and understanding - being used in smart ways.

Gamification in the classroom | missaliceleung - 4 views

NSW Science teacher explaining how she's redesigned a Unit of Work using gamification principles.

Very interesting. After watching the you tube clip on game layer I can see how much I am being manipulated. I can also see that it is inevitable. I just shopped at coles and got my 10% my items reward mnnnn oh well. Coles are very clever players in the marketing world of gaming. I can also see a strong link to extrinsic rewards and Skinners behaviourism.
  •
The question of motivation - intrinsic versus extrinsic - is often brought up around gamification and its relative badges. There is some interesting work moving discussion of motivation beyond this dualism. It may be more complex.

I read this article today and it made me think about the 'older' generations and how they cope with the new technology. It isn't going to be long and we'll become the 'older' generation. How long until we are overwhelmed with a variety of 'new' technologies we can't cope and just go back to our 'old' ways, in this case sending a letter. I'm sure some children have never sent a letter through the post office!! I also love the offer of the CEO to help teach the gentleman how to use online shopping!!
  •
Fair comment about the letter at the post office, but according to my own kids "the post office is where you pick up stuff from ebay" so I guess the concept is still there just the context has changed.
  •
Unfortunately are lot of teachers are "the older generation" as far as classroom practices are concerned. Often using technology means booking a computer labs to allow students to type their assignments (so they can read their hand writing); allowing students to email completed work instead of handing in paper copies or using a data projector to show the class a power point presentation.

Changing education from the ground up Sir Ken Robinson - 2 views

I found this to be quite fascinating and I can relate to what he is saying. I find it interesting how he explains how the governments try to change education and control it from the top down. By putting in leaders, directors or principals, then expecting everyone else down the ladder to conform. He also talks about adaptability and creativity, and how our current systems do not foster these qualities. I am keen to find out what other people think! I have also shared this on my blog. http://rachelyates82.wordpress.com/

Much of what is covered in EDC3100 assumes the status quo of the educational system. In fact, a large part of it focuses on how to fulfil the requirements of the Australian Curriculum. Here's a story (magazine article) about a different approach that has its origins in a number of sources (Piaget and Montessori amongst the more recognisable). A challenge.

Just one of the tweets (and an animated GIF) from a Twitter account called "science porn". The value of this image (and some of the others this account tweets) is they way they help people visualise difficult concepts or ideas. Showing students these types of images/visualisations can help, but what about asking students to create these types of visualisations? How might that help their learning?
