earth album alpha - a slicker google maps + flickr mash-up - 1 views

  •
Earth Album is a simpler, slicker Flickr mash-up that allows you to explore some of the most stunning photos in the world courtesy of Google maps and Flickr. To begin your journey, just click somewhere on the map, e.g. "India". Note-- since the top Flickr images are used, the images change every few weeks; bookmark this site and check back for a different experience in a month!

I'd already saved this but it's such a good source for primary images that I've updated the tags and re-saved it. Flickr contains a surprisingly vast collection of historically relevant images and I'd recommend it for classroom resource design or student research. I guess, like with all user-generated content, there will be issues with the legitimacy and authenticity of some of the images however there are still many reliable photosets I've found which would be useful for a history teacher.

This is a collection of publicly held photographic archives, all put together on Flickr.

This is a flickr group devoted to images of ancient sites, artefacts and churches. They are making an effort to make sure that people correctly tag and date the images so might be useful for you. There are squillions of flickr sites for history images - I won't save them all to the group. If you're looking for images though for your classes, perhaps take a look...

This is an enormous repository of images on flickr all devoted to history. The images are uploads are all done by random people (problem) so the tagging might be even worse than when I bookmark sites to our group. There'll be some gems in with all the trash though - useful for PowerPoints, sources on exams, student assignments, etc?

This photostream from flickr is maintained by Wessex Archaeology in Britain. It contains images of their excavations and the artefacts they've recovered. Useful for investigations of pre-modern Britain, I would imagine.

Sorry to binge on flickr, but this one was too good for an ancient history teacher to ignore. Over 2000 images of sites and artefacts from ancient Greece. Very cool.

Here is the photostream including photos of activities I've run with my classes. I thought I'd add it to generate ideas on re-enactments and activities that people do with their students. I've found activities like this can be surprisingly educational by helping bring what the students have studied to life. I run them at the end of the term.

This is a photostream from a bloke in Sydney on flickr. Much of it is irrelevant but he has some beautiful images from a book published in the 1880's, largely from the Renaissance.

Contains collections on World War I, the Depression, Women's Lib and Honest Abe, among others. I'd imagine it will grow with time. I've actually found Flickr much better as a source of quality historical images than Google Images or Wikimedia Commons.

Flickr: Classical Antiquity: Art & Architecture - 0 views

This group was too good to pass up bookmarking. It's a collection of over 2000 good-quality images of places and artefacts from the classical world. An ancient history teacher's dream. Why are people still buying textbooks?

Thanks Mary for these excellent images. They'll be extremely useful when I'm putting together resources for my Roman history classes.

Useful collection of images you can print out for classroom posters. I was particularly surprised to see that Shakira has a degree in World History. Who would have thought?
