The Battle of Britain from the UK's Imperial War Museum

This unit will introduce the first major clash in the Civil War--the Battle of Bull Run--and encourage students to consider the perspectives of ordinary citizens of the North and the South and the impact of this battle on their lives. The activities are based on the award-winning young adult novel Bull Run by Paul Fleischman.

"Millions of Americans fought and died during the Civil War, and the legacy of the Civil War remains in the poetry and music left behind. Music was used extensively during the Civil War as a means of inspiring loyalty among the troops, and as a source of inspiration and motivation during marching. Poetry was written to encourage unity, to document the experiences of soldiers, and to share women's place in the war. Bands on both sides would frequently borrow songs and lyrics from the other side, using them as parodies. One such tune was "Dixie", though the song was created some period of time before the Civil War, it gained in popularity during this time. "Dixie" originally tells the story of a freed black slave yearning to return home to the simple life of the plantation, both the North and South however, created their own wartime versions. "The Battle Cry of Freedom" and "Home Sweet Home" also featured both Union and Confederate versions. "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Southern Cross," were poems that were later set to music."

"History Animated is a fantastic resource for teachers of US History. The animations will make great supplements to classroom instruction. Great to initiate discussion with students. I gave mine the "TIME" criteria for the award and we battled it out over if it was a deserved award or not...best used after they have some info and background on Hitler.

On Jan. 8, 1815, Gen. Andrew Jackson led American troops to victory in the last major conflict of the War of 1812, two weeks after both nations had signed a peace treaty. Jackson's military success would later propel him to the presidency.

In April 1847, a group of pioneers left Omaha, Nebraska and headed west. Their group consisted of 147 men, three women, and two children. Their journey would cover more than 1,000 miles, and cross the Rocky Mountains. This small group would pave the way for more than 70,000 people to make the same journey. As my son marvels at the battle diaries, postcards, letters and photographs, and scrupulously unfolds war maps depicting the strategic battlelines in the fields of Gallipoli and the Somme, he surrenders to the pleasure of discovering history by his own hands. The touch, the sight, the smell of these items, each tells a story of their own and he takes his time in absorbing it all. Then in true Gen Y form, he reaches for the digital camera and begins to photograph the maps, crests, war pay books, menus of Christmas dinners - detailed and digital proof that he has, at last found, what he was searching for.
