Technology in Schools Faces Questions on Value - NYTimes.com - 3 views

Some of the thinking articulated in this article captures the gridlock of public conversation around the issue of technology in the classroom. I'm reminded of a conversation I had with a colleague in which he was telling me about the many interesting ways he uses powerpoint for instruction. I asked him he ever had his students use powerpoint and he scoffed, "Powerpoint for student presenations is a Middle School right of passage. Please. They're terrible." I told him that if he didn't think powerpoint was a useful means of communication than he wouldn't use it. The fact is we don't teach kids how to use powerpoint well and so they don't use it well. The argument about tech in Ed is much the same. Sometimes when I hear or read about these discussions I think of someone who has an F-14 in his front yard complaing that it is terrible for hanging laundry on. The promise of teaching well in a 21st century classroom focuses on cultivating different skills and more dynamic learning than standardized tests seek to quantify.

A real test for techies: the education market - 3 views

Entrepreneurs in the classroom. Last paragraph of article reads: "But Michael Goldstein, founder of the MATCH charter high school and middle school in Boston, observes that "there's a history several decades long of technology promising to make education better, and teachers finding it remarkably difficult to implement.'' " (page 2) Good commentary on some initiatives and the challenges teachers face with classroom integration.

Seems to me to be a real disconnect with respect to assessment. Assessment, testing in the old model, did not authentically serve the learner. It served the system (modeled on the industrial reward paradigm). If we are focused on learning, assessment only serves the learner in terms of feedback but not as "assessment" as in: you worked hard and you get an 'A'. Getting an 'A' has even less relevance in the 21st centruy paradigm.

Schools weigh risk, benefit of Facebook - CSMonitor.com - 3 views

what is gained, what is lost

I am really surprised to see that teachers are using facebook for class assignments. Why can't students and teachers use the school website for posts and responses. I don't expect to get work related information through facebook, so why should students be expected to do their 'work' in a social medium? Should schools post homework in facebook? Almost all schools have a website. Use it.

How Khan Academy Is Changing the Rules of Education | Magazine - 3 views

  •
an interesting writeup on on the basics of Khan Academy- including a couple of example teachers & classrooms. Also includes interview excerpts with Salman Khan.
  •
It seems that the gamification of Khan Academy is undermining the "dropping out/back" of the technology after a certain amount of time, but students are learning, so is this good or bad?
  •
This article seems pretty consistent with what we heard today. I think the most interesting aspect of the whole Khan Academy phenomenon is not what he does (make direct instruction videos- People learn to cook that way from Emeril), or how he does it (very few production values), or even that the internet makes him so distributable. The most incredible thing to me is that this one guy who did an end run around the entire establishment of EDUCATION is having this much impact on kids, teachers, and policy makers around the world. He isn't doing anything all that innovative and yet he is having the impact on education that one would think would come from an extraordinary innovator. Why isn't that innovator coming from EDUCATION. I think the big generative questions KA offers us in Education are: Why is this such a big deal? (And I do believe it is), Why didn't we think of it?; and Given all we know about education, shouldn't we be able have a much more substantial effect with much more substantial outcomes with as few resources as KA? If not? What are we doing?

India announces $35 tablet computer to help lift villagers out of poverty - The Washing... - 3 views

The real question is what the tablet can and cannot do
  •
I would liken this to a graphing calculator (that is typically required of student's to purchase for the purpose of higher math classes) versus the classroom set of calculators typically found in the elementary math manipulative kits - the ultimate purpose of each device is very different - but the basic or fundamental features are the same - so for India, does it matter how "advanced" the system is if they really just want to get the poorest of its citizens on some type of level playing field?

This artcile points out a strong frustration of mine. I've long believed that teachers and educators need a space to share how products work in the "real world" beyond the studies self-reported by companies. I have been familiar with the whatworks clearinghous and I have to say that the site is cumbersome without any commenting. If the site had a stronger design, compiled information better, and then allowed for users of the vetted programs to comment then they would have a useful tool.
  •
Allison, do you know of any non-goverment or non-profit "Consumer Reports" style ed tech review forums which provide a balanced, ind-depth review (and where users can share their experiences)? After looking at the DOE what works clearing house website, I agree it is not well-layed out.
  •
No- the sites I have stumbled upon in the past few years are more like list serves without any real organization. One of my goals at HGSE is to identify or create a site that would do this well.
  •
Allison, how about we create a 'rating' agency for educational products (software, toys, kits etc) the way we think it should work? (We can call it Allison's list, like Angie's list). I am putting up this idea seriously. If there is a need that is not being met, I suppose it is an opportunity.
