Orwell missed the mark with his vision of a society that is policed by a single panoptical entity (government). WE ARE BIG BROTHER! Regardless of use, taste or even civility, the masses are using their digital recorders to capture everything. These students have developed a very interesting aggrigator of live video cams that layers over Google Earth sat feeds....Check this out!

Education Week: 'School of Future' Struggles to Break From the Past - 0 views

  • The hiring of teachers and administrators is bound by district policies, which add layers to the task of finding those best suited for the job. Students are selected through a lottery system, but there is no academic standard for admission. And the school has to meet the same testing and accountability requirements as others in the district.
  • “The fact that you know what needs to be done doesn’t mean organizationally you are always capable of doing it.”
  • “Do we have a school of the future? I don’t think so,” writes Jan Biros, a researcher at Drexel University and a contributor to the book project. “We have a beautiful building that is still a safe haven for its students. We have a traditional curriculum being taught in a conventional way. We even have some teachers who insist on using the books they are used to and not creating online materials or using the portal and the Internet.”

As I chew through the Visions 2020 readings, I can't help my skepticism...and not due to the seamless integration of emerging ed technology. Alas, PEOPLE and the existing power structure of schools (reform) are not guided by a mission to reinvent, but to move the goal posts on ed standards around so as to insulate and protect the paradigm. How Xbox Can Help Fight Heart Disease - 0 views

  •
Can an emerging technology be 'disruptive' and 'emerging' at the same time? Pre-disruption perhaps? Either way, I don't see this hack replacing the bulky, expensive and single use mode of the standard cardiovascular systems, but then again, is't that how these things develop? Imagine a game that actually got your heart moving (ala Nintendo Wii Fitness) while also running a diagnostic analysis on the back end... Still, Donkey Kong has a terrible bedside manner.

I have always felt a little guilty about printing out online readings. Just as the reading for online discussion tips describes, longer text can be difficult to digest when viewed from a screen. This device is the first of its kind and without a doubt will undergo significant innovations to make it more consumer freindly...think mainframe vs. Apple IIe

MakerBot Industries - Robots That Make Things. - 0 views

  •
Moving in the other direction of Virtual Reality, this inventor has come up with a machine or 'robot' that actually renders digital designs/artifacts into solid, 3-dimensional objects. Surprisingly the machine is pretty cheap and is sold as a kit that the user has to build on his own before turning a photoshop image of his long lost dog Booger into a 4x4x6 hard plastic idol to wear around neck. I jest, but from a 'learning from the whole' perspective, the entire process could be really engaging and educational.

AR Aero - Strategic Plan - 0 views

  • The Vuzix AR Education Group video eyewear products are the first educational media tools that provide individuals with total flexibility to receive, send, and review training and detailed product information through an increasingly ubiquitous web-enabled communication device. This revolutionary approach assures that the most current training and educational information will always be accessible to those who need it where they need it, a necessity for businesses increasingly operating on a global scale.
  •
I was speaking with Chris yesterday and we agreed that it was going to be the entertainment industry that would pioneer this technology. At this point, it looks as if Vuzix core market and strategy for growing their AR library is business (training) and academia. The fact that you can see through the lens but ALSO see the 'broadcast' image is huge. Yesterdays AR demo would have been soooo much more immersive had we been able to keep one eye on the R (reality...cars, appraoching hornets, etc) and one I on the AR.

A Virtual Revolution Is Brewing for Colleges - washingtonpost.com - 0 views

  • When this happens -- be it in 10 years or 20 -- we will see a structural disintegration in the academy akin to that in newspapers now. The typical 2030 faculty will likely be a collection of adjuncts alone in their apartments, using recycled syllabuses and administering multiple-choice tests from afar.

The 1-step migration of research content to the host document is very nice, but outside of that, I think I would be inclined to stick with google docs if for no other reason than users (and any collaborators) do not need to download an application to their computer.

That takes care of the display challenge, now if we could only develop a more sophisticated and biologically intuitive method of data entry (no keys or multi-touch surface), the world will be a very different place. Def. an emerging technology with wild educational/training implications.

SmartPen Video Livescribe :: Never Miss A Word - 0 views

  •
What can I say, its a smartpen. On the flip side of the user-value, a teacher could use the device to 'capture' student work in a digital log, The ability to program the SmartPaper with unique commands would make for some simple yet scalable adaptive testing designs.

Technology Review: An Advert for In-Game Violence - 0 views

  • A team of European and U.S. researchers found ads displayed along with violent scenes to be more memorable to players than those shown with nonviolent content, even though players spent less time looking at them. The results are contrary to expectations stemming from research on television, where violence has been shown to decrease attention to advertisements. Developing a better understanding of the way advertising works in games could help game companies enhance their advertising strategies.
  • Those who played a violent version of the game, where the goal was to run down pedestrians, resulting in a blood-splattered screen, demonstrated significantly better recall of advertised brands than those who played the regular version. The researchers presented their work at the International Conference on Entertainment Computing last year.
  •
The unholy marrage of violent gaming and hightened advert recall...Clearly there are educational implications to be considered here.
