Will bendable computer screens save newspapers?
  •
Ha-hah! Thats awesome. I guess it was only a matter of time until we had flexible computer screens. I'm not sure if it will save and/or replace newspapers. I could definitely see consumers buying this screen and having their news constantly updated. Sure you can look to a computer or smartphone for news, but there's something appealing about this newspaper-like screen...

Google Instant search feeds our real-time addiction - CNN.com - 0 views

  • By providing results before a query is complete and removing the need to hit the "enter" key, Google claims users will save two to five seconds per search

Two to five seconds to hit Enter?  In a society obsessed with saving time, even mere seconds are perceived as valuable.
  • Web connections have become significantly faster over time

  • quick status updates

Are the speed and brevity of these messages bypassing the potential exploration of a certain topic area in-depth, or is very topic only superficial?
  • many social sites now use our social connections to recommend content to us without the need to seek it out
    • Devon Dickau

Search engines do the work for us.  We don't even need to know how to find the information ourselves these days.
  • What's more, this feature enables truly personalized discovery by taking into account your search history, location and other factors -- Google is essentially emulating social networks by trying to predict what we're looking for without the need to submit a fully-formed search
  • The next step of search is doing this automatically. When I walk down the street, I want my smartphone to be doing searches constantly: 'Did you know ... ?' 'Did you know ... ?' 'Did you know ... ?' 'Did you know ... ?

      Constant delivery of knowledge.
    • Devon Dickau

In thinking about evolving technology in terms of both formal and informal education, I question whether or not constant and immediate access to information is improving or harming individual knowledge.  By this I mean that because we can so easily search for something online, what motivation is there to actually know anything.  If we have Wikipedia on our phones, and know HOW to find it, can't we just spend 30 seconds finding the page and "know" something for topic of conversation, or a test?  What is the point, then, or learning, of retaining knowledge?  I feel that this may be a problem in coming generations.  What knowledge will our students actually feel they need to retain? I took solace in the fact that at least we have to learn and teach HOW to find the information, but with new technologies like predictive and instant searching, it almost seems like that is a skill that will soon become unneeded as well.  We might as well just be physically plugged in to the Internet with access to all information simultaneously. Thoughts from the group?

DIY-Virtual Reality...prob. not in Walmart anytime soon - 1 views

  • Epcot on Wednesday opened a new attraction called "Sum of All Thrills," which lets kids use computer tablets to design a virtual roller coaster, bobsled track or plane ride. After inputting their designs, kids climb into a robotic carriage that uses virtual-reality technology to help them experience the ride they've created.
  • in the world of amusement parks and museums. Taking cues from the video game industry, park and ride designers have realized that people -- especially young ones -- want to interact with and even design their own thrill rides
  •
Newest Disney attraction called - Sum of All Thrills where kids get to design their own virtual roller coaster. It uses virtual-reality technology. "Disney hopes the interactive nature of the ride would also help kids learn that math and science can be fun."
  •
While I would not consider this incredibly expensive ride a 'distruptive innovation' or even an emerging ed technology, what Epcot has done by bringing this DIY-VR concept to the masses (if you are one of the masses that can A- afford Disney and B-have the patience to wait in line for `5-6 hours) is very important to future ed tech innovation strategies. The progression/invention of such cost prohibitive entertainment tools will fall squarely on the high-end theme parks and consumer venues. The challenge has been set by Epcot and now others must either compete directly or develop a better or more accessible solution. Off the top of my head, I can think of a few cost saving innovations that might be developed in this 'race'- Artificial G-Force Engline: variable air pressure, smart-chairs, fans

What is lost and gained when schools save money by purchasing netbooks rather than laptops?
  •
Was just going to post this also. The Acer mentioned though is one of the absolute cheapest notebooks one can get. Not sure that it was the best comparison. There are some netbooks that have amazing battery life (8+ hours) in the sub $350 range. If the article's point is about resource intensive apps like video, it should also clearly point out that the acer's battery will die out well before a similarly priced netbook from samsung.

Board approves Idaho online class requirement - Boston.com - 3 views

  •
Online education for high school students is not an option, it is mandatory. Idaho Education Board approved that at least two credits of online class is required to graduate from high school. Idaho is first in the nation to mandate online class. We have read articles and discussed in class pros and cons of online learning. However, should online learning be mandatory for high school students? Do you think it is a good idea?
  •
Having online education for the sake of online education does not seem like a good idea to me. If it saves them enough money that they can improve classroom education, that might be worth it, but I'm not convinced that this is worth doing.
  •
Agree with Ayelet. Idaho board of education went through this despite heavy criticism from public. Instead of making it an option, Idaho makes it mandatory. Online education may not work for some students. They may feel that it has been pushed down their throat.
