Good utility since many people will likely be sharing documents via Google Docs while working on projects for coursework.

Hey Chris. Given all the other options we have for creating and sharing documents and information, how do you see this being most useful to you?

The 1-step migration of research content to the host document is very nice, but outside of that, I think I would be inclined to stick with google docs if for no other reason than users (and any collaborators) do not need to download an application to their computer.

Using Facebook in the classroom has come up a few times in our discussions. In the same vein, this is a look at an interesting way of using Google Docs in the classroom.

Inkling makes interactive textbooks and are really trying to raise the bar in this area. I'm interested in the  "Social Learning Network" inside the Inkling textbooks. In other words, you and your friends can highlight/annotate and collaborate inside the textbook much like you would, for example, on a google doc.

LearningSpace, a new tool from ePals that is also COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) compliant, provides K-12 appropriate selective access to the applications within a protected, customizable social learning environment. Schools and districts can customize the rules and policies that determine which groups, classes and projects have access to third-party applications.

Google is going after Microsoft with their new open source operating system designed originally for netbook users - so no software has to be installed.  It is all browser based and stores docs on Google servers - great for computer crashes - security???

UC Irvine's TLTC frontpage linked to this archived Google presentation on how teachers can use Google apps in Higher Education. Almost felt sales-pitchy and I wondered how much time and energy faculty are willing to invest in configuring and setting that stuff up for their own class, as opposed to using whatever the university's IT team has set up and standardized around.

If you start watching at the 30-minute mark, you can get a peek at how he uses technology in the design of his course and to shape participation during class. At the 34:00 minute mark he is describing a jigsaw reading activity, similar to the study groups we are often encouraged to form. You won't believe where he and his students go with this. I love his statement, "There are no natives here." So true. I can't find the other video where he shows his collaborative notetaking platform that he uses in a 200-student class, but it's very cool. That's where I got the idea for some kind of wiki or google doc that might allow us to manage lecture notes and the backchannel.

Meeting Hope In the next few decades, hundreds of millions of young, poor families will migrate to cities in the developing world in search of work and opportunity. Education provides them with a shared sense of hope. Many will be the first generation in their families to go to school. It is vital that the hopes they invest are not disappointed.

This is an old article, but I thought quite appropriate given the discussion in class yesterday. This topic continues to fascinate me and I'd love to hear what you guys think about it.
