Omosa project - an educational MUVE in action - YouTube - 3 views

Omosa is a virtual learning environment which helps students to learn ecology and biology. It aims at the current condition that students are having fewer opportunities to go on real field trips and work with real animals. It's cool in helping students learn the biological circle of animals and the environment.

A 3D computer animation of the axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) procedure on Vimeo - 1 views

The first (or at least most comprehensive!) 3D visualization of this kind of surgical procedure; arguably these kinds of animations are superior to 2D animations for showing anatomy. Next step for education: interactive surgical media?
  •
These kind of videos would be helpful for medical students to watch in their surgery clerkship before observing a particular surgery, especially since anatomy curriculum has been shortened and cut throughout national medical school programs.

RSA Animate - Changing Education Paradigms - 0 views

An animated presentation of Sir Ken Robinson's views on education, esp. its effects on creativity and innovation. It's 11+ minutes, but I found it went quickly.

Rsa Animate is becoming one of my favorite distractions. It is interesting to compare Kahn with RSA. both using similar media for presentation of ideas. Production quality and content very different. Is this reflective of the difference in goals?

The Animation Revolution - 0 views

"As technology speeds up and our children are raised more and more on video (like YouTube) and video games, they won't have the time or patience for reading, even on a fancy digital device. And they won't want to listen to others reading to them, either (see Audible). We're on a one way street to animation replacing text books."

PETA Foots The Bill For Virtual Frog Dissection Software In India | TechCrunch - 0 views

  •
Example of AR in biology. Expected ban on animal dissection in India seems to encourage further AR adoption in classroom. I wonder if there are any other external factors that could put AR as ''must consider as an alternative soon'' rather than as ''nice to have in the future''.

New tools could improve learning | The Tennessean | tennessean.com - 1 views

Trip to zoo without leaving classroom! This tool is interactive and students can see and hear rear animals, including multi-touch, multi-user interactive tool. Another interesting aspect is that it never gives negative feedback. "Instead of telling you that it's wrong, it just tells you that it isn't right. So students can work together to find the correct answer, which increases collaboration among students." Similarities with EcoMUVE?

YouTube - WHERE GOOD IDEAS COME FROM by Steven Johnson - 1 views

  •
Another fun RSA Animate video -- this one about Steven Johnson's "Where Good Idea From." Possible relevance for thinking not only about tech's role for students, but also how collaboration enabled by technology can yield big -- possibly disruptive? -- ideas among innovators in education.

Conrad Wolfram: Teaching kids real math with computers | Video on TED.com - 2 views

  • From rockets to stock markets, many of humanity's most thrilling creations are powered by math. So why do kids lose interest in it? Conrad Wolfram says the part of math we teach -- calculation by hand -- isn't just tedious, it's mostly irrelevant to real mathematics and the real world. He presents his radical idea: teaching kids math through computer programming.
  •
Very similar to the idea of teaching computer programming via storytelling/animation (Scratch)

Hey, he stole my idea (about teaching math through teaching computer programming) ! ;-) Thanks for this post.
  •
I just watched this video and it's actually billed INCORRECTLY on that Ted.com description! The guy is *not* saying to teach math through teaching computer programming at'all!! He is simply advocating to use the power of the computer to teach math - i.e. using programs such as Mathematica. His slide says "Computer-based math: critical reform" -- so, he is saying that students should use the computer for the computing (which is for sure true) and teachers should teach with the students using this computing power asap (which I agree with) ... but he is *not* actually saying to teach computer programming ... p.s. This video is sweeping through the math teacher twitter streams and blogs right now (yes, there is such a community out there!) But, in my opinion, his idea is no big leap ...
  •
Absolutely agree... the idea presented here is no big leap at all, especially to us who are following these advances pretty closely. I saw the parallels with scratch in terms of engaging the learner.

ARTLAB+ - 2 views

  •
ARTLAB+ is a digital media studio that gives local teens the opportunity to become integral members of a design team. They create new visitor experiences at the Hirshhorn, taking their inspiration from its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. ARTLAB+ designers hone crucial twenty-first century skills as they make videos, animations, wikis, games, podcasts, and more. By the end of every project session, the design team has created a unique product that enriches the museum experiences of other visitors and showcases each teen's creative growth. After-school, weekend, and weeklong ARTLAB+ workshops are held year-round to accommodate a wide variety of schedules. We welcome all teens, regardless of experience. Looks like a great way to help introduce twenty-first century skills- BB

This is really cool- combining mobile, situated learning in the real world, with creative group projects, and letting kids direct their own active, learning 'flow'.. Can this scale up to schools (or after-school programs), without access to museum artifacts and mobile devices?

Apps of the week: Games for kids - CNN.com - 1 views

  • You won't be able to get this coloring book-like app out of the hands of your kids, who may plead, "Can I color just one more picture, please?" The drawings have thick outlines so it's impossible to color outside the lines. You pick colors with your fingers and select parts of the picture to paint. Pictures range from hot-air balloons to Earth.
  • The sounds of this memory game are worth it alone. If you're looking for an educational app, this "Concentration"-like game teaches kids to remember which tile last hid a particular animal. Each animal makes a unique noise, from a leaf-chomping giraffe to a squeaky mouse.
  •
I have experienced this first hand. Adults find it cute to watch their young children staring deeply into their cell phones (iphones) as they pop digital balloons, etc. Disruptive? Def. if you are sitting next to this family at a restaurant.

The Future of Education: Tablets vs. Textbooks - 0 views

  •
Key concerns about the sudden rush to dump textbooks for open source content
  •
This transition will happen relatively quickly given the current cost of textbooks and the low cost of tablets. Fortunately, I think we will find that the digital textbooks and other features on the tablets will be far more engaging and effective teaching tools than the traditional textbook. The ability of the digital text to read aloud (in several languages) and provide visual support including high def color diagrams, animation, and video, as well as create intuitive links to vocabulary and 'checking for understanding' will be a great support to students and teachers.

This is an RSA I shared with the blog class I teach. I think the event of "shared knowledge" and its effect on groups dynamics is very interesting. The prompt I used is below: Here are the three questions asked by James Surowiecki in the post below. Please consider them and answer one or all three in a comment. What does the blogosphere tell us about what we believe motivates people to do what they do? Do blogs have the possibility of accessing a collective intelligence that has previously remained untapped? What are the potential problems of blogs as we know them?
