Ninja Cupido is an free internet based game featured on the tokidoki website. Aesthetics? Check! User Control? Not so much! (At least not for me!)  Perhaps it appeals to tweens?

What happens when everything can be made engaging, instantly?

I read the UMass study that it references (average time to wait for a page to load is ~2 sec) when it came out and initially found it surprising, but after paying closer attention to my internet habits, I realized that I, too, am quite impatient!!

I do feel media can be viewed as a reward because of the high levels of enjoyment and engagement when one consumes media. That is why it is so 'gratifying' and we end up constantly yearning for it unless we train ourselves to observe our media consumption patterns. It is important to monitor these patterns.

The Parent Engagement Tracker (PET) is a secured information system developed to easily track, measure and link parental involvement to student achievement. The software is available via the Internet and Microsoft Access Principals are able to measure parent attendance of various parent activities, school compact parent requirement hours, and the popularity of the different types of activities on a daily, monthly, quarterly or annual basis. This is really new. I have never seen something that tries to incentivize parenting.Do you think this would be a good initiative for a school.

How did you stumble on this? The copyright date is still listed as 2010 and three of the 5 links, including "About Us" are not working. In addition to the fact that I do not think it would be successful or a good idea and PET is a terrible name, the company simply does not seem to be up and working. Perhaps it is the wireframe for a college project :)

I'm sorry that I didn't see this earlier. I definitely think this may have been a real organization. The Connecticut parents union seemed to be doing something with it and here is a link to their brochure http://ctparentsunion.org/PETBrochureFinal.pdf, IN addition, the Hartford Public Schools piloted the program in 2010. They might have disappeared but there is definitely evidence that they were an actual organization.

Pizza for straight-A's is so pre-Internet. Remember those programs at chain restaurants like Pizza Hut that bribed kids into doing well in school by offering a free pizza for every straight-A report card? Ntiedo Etuk does, and he's looking to bring the concept into the digital sphere with DimensionU, a comprehensive student motivation system that wants to create the first form of "educational currency."

Some very useful lessons to learn fro Mooresville. Looks like the broader ecosystem (such as cheper access to broadband internet) has been thought through rather than just dropping a laptop into the classroom.

Is Google "really" making us stupid? How does the ability to easily access a breadth of information affect our motivation to go for depth?

People, the headline says it all. For some reason I am totaly freaked out about hitting play! This is so simple yet somehow totally intriguing.

We talked briefly in class about how depression by definition is lack of motivation yet people who are depressed are somehow motivated to be on line and participate in online gaming. The articles I have posted give some insight to this, but I don't feel satisfied with the explanations they have. Any ideas?

This week, PBS's Frontline aired a program looking at the impacts of digital media on the population as a whole. A large portion is dedicated to exploring how digital media impact engagement of young people in school and at home.

I watched part of it and would recommend it.

I find the arguement that there is no practical need for a network connection this robust ridiculous. You would think that at this stage in the revolution the experts would be aware that the old adage 'if you build it they will come' rings quite true for tech innovation. Perhaps at present 322 terabytes per second is a overkill, but think that we are still going to be surfing the web in the same ways we currently do in 5-10 years is very shortsighted.
