Why relevant and summary: This article was an extract from a book called "Bullying - What Adults Need to Know and Do to Keep Kids Safe", which gives advice on how to handle bullying and how to help young children who are subject to it. It gives 8 tips that anyone who works with children can find useful. It stresses the idea that this is a phenomena that unfortunately exists in our schools, but it is preventable. We should educate ourselves and our kids and empower them to face challenges with confidence. How has this influenced my thinking: I am a mother of two young boys, and even though we have not experienced any bullying, is good to know as much as possible that in any event I can help my boys deal with this challenge. Kidpower is a non profit organization which advocates and helps kids against abuse, kidnapping, bullying etc nation wide and internationally.

Title: Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Author: Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant to testing intelligence because the Wechsler Intelligence Scale is a method of measurement for testing intelligence in children. This scale offers subtests that measures intelligence by verbal and nonverbal performance. How This Influenced My Thinking: I was able to better understand the different subtests that makes up the Wechsler Intelligence scale. Title: How Does Religion Affect the Lives of Adolescents? Date: 11-30-2005 Author: Jennifer Elliot Summary and why important: This was an excellent article about religion and adolescence. It was well written, had great sources, it taped onto this issue from all the sides. It talked about the media's influence, how recent religious scandal might or have affected faith in our young generation and it explained that religion is one of the factors that influences adolescents to make the right choices and not the only one. How it has change my thinking: I liked this article because it seemed impartial, it did not glorify or vilify those who practice religion and those who do not. It was realistic, it explained some great concepts, and everything was backed by research. Credibility: the author has a BS in Mass Communication, a BS in Psychology and is a Certified Mental Health Technician. This article was published on yahoo! voices which is a great website with a good reputation.

Title: Formal Operational Stage Author: Saul McLeod Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: Explains clearly the Formal Operational Stage and has many ideas of tests to determine the difference between a Formal Operational thinker and a Concrete Operational Thinker. Discusses thought processes such as 'inferential reasoning', 'third eye problem', and the pendulum task to explain in detail what the Formal Operational Stage requires. How this influenced my thinking: Gave me lots of ideas of ways to test for the Formal Operational Stage and to discuss it effectively in my paper. Title: Parents' Sex Talk with Kids: Too Little, Too Late Author: Alice Park Date Published: Monday, Dec. 07, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: this article discusses parents views on giving the sex talk and how one might go about doing it, and what benefits come from being open with your kids about it. Most parents dont discuss sex topics and their children are already gaining sexual experience without safe background knowledge. How This Influenced My Thinking: i knew sex was always an awkward topic, but when i was young my dad explained to me what it was, and discussed puberty with me and it was normal and not odd. as i grew into adolescence it became wierd to talk to my parents. this just showed me that parents can find it difficult to the point where they ignore the issue and dont bother discussing it. Title: Kohlberg Author: Saul McLeod Date Published: 2011 Why relevant/summary: This goes over the different levels and stages of kohlberg's moral reasoning theory. Explains an exaple he used for determining moral reasoning (Heinz question). How this influenced my thinking: This further explained what each stage resembles morally. this showed me one of the examples from his research, and how each group resoinded to it. this gave me firther depth into the stages. (at least from another perspective) Credibility: Saul McLeod has written quite a bit of information around psychology and development. Simply Psychology website. has citations and references.

Title:Religious vs Secular Humanism Author: Austin Cline Date Published: n.d Why Relevant and Summary: It helps define what it is to be humanist, and discusses whether their is some sort of religion involved in everything, even within Atheism or Humanism. How This Influenced My Thinking: It got me wondering about all the different religious believes and how different everyone's mentality and beliefs are. Credibility of Source: Seems credible.

Title: Kantian Ethics Author: none Date Published: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: Relevant to Kolhberg's final sixth stage of moral reasoning: Universal Ethical Principals. Kant believed that moral reasoning is not based on the idea that humans are a means to an end, but that were an end in ourselves. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have studied Kant in Philosophy classes in the past, and enjoyed having the chance here to cross previous learning into what I am learning now. How This Influenced My Thinking: I showed me how our problem of obesity cannot be limited to diet and exercise, but is the perfect storm of sendentary/obesity-promoting occurances within our culture. It warns of the long-lasting effects an emotional judgment may not take the time to contemplate. How This Influenced My Thinking: This whole Focus on the Family site has great resources and ideas for those in marital distress.
