This week, California took a big step forward in open-source education. Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a proposal to create a website that will allow students to download popular textbooks for free. The legislation contains two bills: One, a proposal for the state to fund 50 open-source digital textbooks, targeted to lower-division courses, which will be produced by California's universities. The other bill is a proposal to establish a California Digital Open Source Library to host those books.

Popularity of eBooks has soared to unprecedented levels. Paper-bound books are getting replaced by numerous technologically enhanced e-reader devices like Kindle or Nook. Following digitalization of books and changing preference of readers, many book publishers have gone or are planning to go digital.

Last year, Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers Inc. learned that a popular iPad application based on a book could drive sales of both. Now the publisher will see whether the reverse works: a book based on an iPad app.

I wonder if Eric Sclater will be talking about this case in his copyright law class. Curious to see how this plays out.

I can see this definitely being a topic in Eric's class. I just wonder why AP waited so long to claim copyright infringement? This image has become so popular and a part of history, that is probably what is prompting this law suit. I want to see the outcome of this as well - should be interesting!
