Provides an analysis of over 50 state and postsecondary system reports on remedial education that the Getting Past Go project reviewed. In a press release, Connecticut Higher Education Commissioner Michael Meotti and State Education Commissioner Mark K. McQuillan discussed the work of the state's P-20 Council. The council works in three areas: building partnerships between school districts and higher education institutions, aligning data across all educational units, and strengthening the preparation and professional development of teachers and principals.

This literature review identifies reoccurring themes found throughout the history of developmental education in American higher education; examines the ways developmental education programs have been conceived and understood as a policy issue; and looks to how individuals, systems and states have responded to the remedial education policy debate. "The work of the CAI is part of the Missouri Department of Higher Education strategy to increase participation in higher education and to smooth pathways for students entering into and progressing in higher education. The goal of this work is to improve the college readiness of high school students throughout Missouri. CAI is also driven by the work of the Mathematics, Engineering, Technology, and Science (METS) Coalition, as well as the P-20 Council and the Director of Education and Workforce Innovation. "

Urges policymakers to focus the mission of community colleges in three core areas: basic skills education, career technical education and preparation for transfer to four-year universities. The Commission called for shifting adult basic education from the state education department to the community college system, and for giving more authority to the chancellor to oversee the campuses. "The Importance of Minority-Serving Institutions January 16, 2012, 7:53 pm By Marybeth Gasman This past week the Institute for Higher Education Policy released a report titled The Role of Minority-Serving Institutions in National College Completion Goals. The report urges the nation to look closely at minority-serving institutions (MSI's) and their work with underrepresented minorities for clues on student learning and student success. It also emphasizes the role of MSI's in educating a disproportionate number of low-income and first-generation students. Nearly 98 percent of the black and Native American students who attend MSI's are eligible for need-based financial aid. Moreover, almost 50 percent of MSI students receive Pell Grants in comparison to all students. These students, according to countless research studies, are some of the most difficult to retain and graduate as they have less access to quality education and opportunities."

Summarizes the findings and recommendations of the Developmental Education Task Force that was charged with identifying steps the Virginia Community College System could take to increase the success of students that require remedial education. (Virginia Community College System, September 2009)

Report on a statewide developmental education survey conducted by TX Higher Education Coordinating Board

This analysis focuses on four different types of interventions for improving students' progress through remedial education and into college-level courses, including (1) strategies that help students avoid developmental education by shoring up their skills before they enter college; (2) interventions that accelerate students' progress through developmental education by shortening the timing or content of their courses; (3) programs that provide contextualized basic skills together with occupational or college-content coursework; and (4) programs that enhance the supports for developmental level learners, such as advising or tutoring.

Describes Getting Past Go's policy framework for how states can more effectively integrate reforms to remedial education policy into efforts to increase college attainment rates. The framework centers on four key policy levers: assessment and placement; data and reporting; delivery of instruction; accountability and continuous improvement; and funding.
